MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University limited Mayville State to just eight first-half field goals and allowed just 39.2 percent shooting in a 74-57 NCAA Division II nonconference men's basketball win Sunday at the Minot State Dome.
The Beavers (3-1 overall) didn't allow many Comet good looks at the basket and when Mayville State missed, the Beavers cleaned up the boards. MSU allowed just three Mayville State offensive rebounds and held a huge 43-29 advantage on the boards.
"I thought we played really good basketball in stretches – offensively and defensively," MSU head coach
Matt Murken said. "We're still a little bit too up and down. We didn't finish that game off the last six minutes the way we need to. We built it up to about a 22 point lead and we let them come back and cut it to about 13. We've got to finish a game and compete for 40 minutes."
Minot State led 30-20 at halftime and ran it up 22 on a
Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) 3-pointer with 8:27 to play. The Beavers made the run with equal part defense similar to the first half, and a big game from its big man,
Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.). Prosser netted 10 of his game-high 21 points in the run and finished with 15 second-half points on 6 of 7 shooting from the floor.
"He's a very skilled guy," Murken said of Prosser. "When he plays with energy he's very good. He played with a ton of energy in the second half. Our guards and other forwards did a great job of getting him the ball where he can be effective. The play from him in the second half was a big key to our run."
The Comets (3-3), who played the game as an exhibition, chipped away at the Beavers lead and cut it to 14 on a pair of free throws by Darnell Landon. But MSU didn't allow it to get any closer from there. MSU countered the Mayville run with a three-point play by
Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) and a 3-pointer by
Thomas Korf (Sr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) on the next two possessions to push it back to 20 points.
"We play some great teams coming up and we've got to be a little bit better and consistent, but I like the growth of our team," Muken said. "I like the contributions from multiple guys. I like how hard we play at times we just have to learn how to sustain it a little bit better."
Mayville State was led in scoring by Chuck Robinson, who finished with 12 points to go along with four blocked shots and four rebounds. A.B. Najee added 10 points for the Comets.
Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) and Pelo both scored 11 points for the Beavers and both hit three 3-pointers in the game. MSU was 8-of-15 shooting on 3s as a team.
Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) came off the bench to score eight points and pull down eight rebounds for the Beavers and Korf, Robinson
Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) all finished with seven points. Robinson led the Beavers with 10 rebounds, while Mertens and McDonald had three assists apiece.
Minot State had one more nonconference game before getting into Northern Sun play, taking on Dickinson State Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Dome.
