BOX SCOREMINOT, N.D. – After defeating the University of Mary Marauders just one week ago in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opening dual at the Minot State Dome, the Minot State University wrestling team was unable to pull off a repeat performance as they fell to the Marauders 23-17 in a non-conference dual Thursday evening.
"We've got some ticky-tac injuries and it was really disappointing to see how our guys reacted to them," Beavers head coach
Robin Ersland said. "It forced us to put some back-ups in and unfortunately they were not up to it."
Just like last Thursday, the Beavers got off to an early start as
Anthony Battle (So., 125, Wahiawa, Hawaii) won the first match of the meet by forfeit giving Minot State a 6-0 lead.
In the next match,
Jason Huger (Fr., 133, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) wrestled in place of
Joshua Douglas (Sr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla) in the 133 weight class and was unable to come up with a win. Huger concede three team points in a 3-1 decision.
After a loss by Christopher Warf (Fr., 141, Marianna, Fla.) in the 141 match,
Cody Haugen (Fr., 149, Minot, N.D.) got the Beavers back on the winning side of things as he pinned his opponent at the 2:04 mark.
The Beavers headed into the intermission with a 12-9 lead before
Ricard Avakovs (Jr., 165, Riga, Latvia) won his first match back coming off an injury last week.
A stretch of three straight losses in the 174, 184 and 197 weight classes, though, doomed the Beavers down the stretch as U-Mary clinched a victory with a 14-0 major decision when Corey Parsons defeated MSU's
Taylor Barstad (Fr., 197, Velva, N.D.).
Mitchell Eull (So., HWT, Buffalo, Minn.) did end the dual on a high note for the Beavers as he took the final match of the night with a 4-0 decision.
"Credit to Mary," Ersland said. "They showed up to wrestle. Our guys didn't—they were already thinking about break."
With the three-week academic break at Minot State comes a long break from competition for the wrestling team. The Beavers are scheduled to wrestled Minnesota State in their second NSIC dual of the season on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
