MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minot State University ran into a hot-shooting Minnesota State University-Moorhead as the No. 19 ranked Dragons rolled to a 99-64 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball win Friday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Beavers (5-2 overall, 1-1 NSIC) nearly gave up as many points in the first half to MSU-M (55) as it did in the entire game (61) in a win over rival University of Mary last week. The Dragons hit 16 3-pointers, shooting 51.6 percent from beyond the arc in the win.
"We wanted to find out, regardless of win or lose, what we need to do better," said MSU head coach
Matt Murken. "Some of those things got exposed tonight. I think our guys know what a high-level team in our league looks like.
"I don't want to take anything away from Moorhead, they are undefeated for a reason. They can really score."
The Dragons' (9-0, 2-0) hot shooting began early on and three straight possessions with a 3-pointer – two by Tyler Vaughan – turned a small lead into a 25-10 advantage with 11:04 to play in the first half.
The Beavers never really recovered from the start, but played better in the second half, finishing with 38 points after mustering just 24 in the first half. The Beavers turned the ball over just 10 times in the game, but forced only five miscues by MSU-M. The Dragons also had a big 36-24 advantage on the glass.
"I thought we played much better in the second half," Murken said. "If we don't miss some layups and free throws, we win the second half. When we do execute, we can be a good basketball team, but we need to do some of those things better."
MSU Moorhead had great balance as six players reached double figures and nine of the 10 players who scored hit for at least seven. Vaughan and Ngijol Songolo led all scorers with 15 points apiece, while Vaughan added six assists. Isaac Sevlie and Jordan Riewer both hit for 12 points in the win.
Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) finished with 12 points to pace the Beavers. Korf hit three 3-pointers and 3 for 3 from the free-throw line for his 12.
Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) added nine points and five rebounds.
Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) and
Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) added eight points and five rebounds apiece.
Minot State finishes a three-game road swing to start the NSIC schedule with a 7 p.m. game at Northern State Saturday.
