TICKETSRECORDS: Minot State began its season on Sept. 7, 2014 with a 1-1 tie against non-conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Beavers are 0-0-1 entering the week of Sept. 8. Southern Nazarene holds a 2-0-0 record entering their match with Minot State with two shutouts to start the season. Central Missouri also enters the week of Sept. 8 with a 2-0-0 record.
COACHES CORNER:
Jason Spain is in his fifth season as head coach of the women's soccer program at Minot State. Spain has done impressive work in his four seasons with the team, sporting a highly successful 42-27-9 record. Last season, Spain led the Beavers to their second consecutive birth in the NSIC postseason tournament. In 2012, the Beavers won the NSIC tournament and claimed the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. Southern Nazarene is led by Julie Duncan who's in her fifth season with the program. Duncan previously served as the assistant coach at SNU for six seasons before being named head coach. She's compiled a 38-43-3 record in four years. Lewis Theobald is in his 8th season coaching Central Missouri. He's been named MIAA coach of the year in six of his eight seasons with the program.
RANKINGS: The National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll will not be released until Sept. 9, but the Beavers were selected to finish No. 8 in the NSIC this season by the conference coaches. Southern Nazarene was selected to finish No. 4 in the GAC. Central Missouri came in voted as No. 1 team in the MIAA.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State University began their season with a long 18-hour road trip to Southwestern Oklahoma State this past weekend. The two teams faced-off against each other once before in the 2012 NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs came out victorious in that meeting with a 3-0 victory. This year the Beavers played the Bulldogs to a 1-1 draw. Senior defender
Taylor Bachman-Williams tied the game up in the 44th minute of the contest heading home a free kick taken from the left side. Despite holding a heavy lead in the shots category, the Beavers were unable to find another goal in the final 45 minutes and extra 20 minutes of overtime.
NOTING THE CRIMSON STORM: Southern Nazarene began the 2014 season in strong fashion this past week recording two shutouts and scoring five total goals in their games against Rogers State and Oklahoma Christian. The Crimson Storm finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 9-9 and a conference record of 5-5. Mallary Pineda leads the way for SNU with two goals and one assist so far this season.
NOTING THE JENNIES: Central Missouri started the 2014 season with two Northern Sun Intercollegiate opponents this past week going 2-0. The Jennies defeated Augustana in their season opener by a score of 2-0. Alex Yockey and Jada Scott both recorded goals in the game. The Jennies went on to defeat No. 8 Minnesota-Duluth by the same score of 2-0. Central Missouri has yet to travel on the road for a game, so their trip to Herb Parker will be a good test.
SERIES HISTORY: Minot State and Southern Nazarene have never played a game against each other in recorded history. That will change on Sept. 11 at Herb Parker Stadium. The Beavers have faced Central Missouri just twice in the history of the program. The Jennies have one win and one tie against Minot State.
DEFENSE DONE RIGHT: The Minot State backline allowed just five shots to be placed on target in their first match of the season against perennial powerhouse, Southwestern Oklahoma State. Not only did the backline hold their own defensively, but senior defender
Taylor Bachman-Williams (Minot, N.D.) scored the only goal off of a set piece for the Beavers in the contest.
OH CANADA:
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) came out and made a strong impression in her first game in over a year after redshirting last season. She recorded eight shots in the first game of the season for the Beavers, four more than any other player on the field on Sunday.
STRENGTH IN SET PIECES: Minot State scored their one and only goal on a set piece against SWOSU this past Sunday, and set pieces are beginning to be one of the areas Minot State can rely on to score goals. In the Beavers' preseason exhibition against Idaho State, the team found the back of the net on a set piece to score one of their two goals against the NCAA Division I opponent.
BY THE NUMBERS10: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference recorded 10 total wins in the first week of NCAA Division II women's soccer action. Seven of 16 teams only opened with one game in the first week.
12: The Beavers committed 12 fouls in their game against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday, more than six NSIC teams committed in their two opening games combined.
18: The Beavers travelled 18 hours one-way to open their season against Southwestern Oklahoma State last Sunday. Head coach
Jason Spain made it a point to face quality competition in the team's non-conference schedule.
