Box Score MINOT, N.D. – It was a goal 365-plus days in the making.
Minot State University's
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Sask.) – who redshirted last season – scored on a breakaway in the 96th minute to lift the Beavers to a thrilling 1-0 win over Southern Nazarene University Thursday in nonconference NCAA Division II women's soccer in front of 638 fans at Herb Parker Stadium.
"It felt amazing to get back on the field after watching last year," MacFarlane said. "This was unreal. All the hard work, the practice and the sprints that maybe we don't like when Jason makes us do it, paid off. We know we can win games even if it goes into overtime."
MacFarlane took a feed from freshman
Maritssa Perez (M, Santa Ana, Calif.) and lifted a floating shot over SNU's goalkeeper Natasha Fuentes from nearly 25 yards out. MacFarlane knew it was golden almost as it left her foot.
"I saw Maritssa get the ball and know how fast she is on the dribble. She put a great ball in front of me and I saw the goalie come out and knew I could chip it over. I chipped it and turned around to celebrate with my teammates."
The win all but erased a sour feeling from a season ago where the Beavers lost five one-goal games, started a jubilant on-field celebration and stirred up an already boisterous crowd – the second biggest in school history.
"It was a great win for us and a great finish by Jamie," said MISU head coach
Jason Spain. "I'm really happy for her to get the overtime winner coming back for her senior year. We did a lot of fitness stuff in the spring and we are mentally tough. It was a one-way track in overtime. I'm very proud of them."
The game was played with late-season intensity. The two teams combined for four yellow cards, two on each squad, and 23 total fouls. Both teams struggled early to find scoring chances, but Minot State started to control the pace and the chances midway through the first half. By the end of regulation, Minot State had an 11-7 advantage on shots and held an 8-4 advantage on shots on goal.
Part of what kept the game tight in the first half was the Beavers were whistled for five offsides, but MacFarlane and company adjusted to the Crimson Storm's defensive alignment.
"We needed to watch it a little more, take some time and wait," she said. "We needed to hold our runs that one second longer. We knew we had the speed to get around them, just had to wait a second more before going."
Fuentes finished with eight saves for Sothern Nazarene (2-1-0), while Mallary Pineda finished with three shots and a shot on goal in the loss.
MacFarlane had three shots and two shots on goal, while
Kayla Schlittenhart (Jr., M, Sparks, Nev.) and Emily Rebelo (Jr., M, Sacramento, Calif.) had two shots on goal apiece for the Beavers.
Gemma Biasetto pitched her fourth career shutout, making four saves.
"We were really good in the back tonight, very tight in the back," Spain said. "We were solid all across except for one ball, so hats off to them. And, Gemma had a good game in goal. We are sky-high right now. We fully believe we can't be scored on and that's a good feeling going into each game."
Minot State finishes the weekend with another top regional team as Central Missouri comes to Minot Saturday at 1 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.
