RECORDS: Minot State enters the week of Sept. 15 with a 1-1-1 overall record. The Beavers have one tie on the road and split their two home games this past weekend with a win over Southern Nazarene and loss to Central Missouri. U-Mary begins conference play this week with the same 1-1-1 record as the Beavers. Minnesota-Crookston opened conference play with a loss (0-1) and sit at 1-2-1 overall. Bemidji State began their conference season with a win (1-0) and hold a 2-2 overall record.
COACHES CORNER:
Jason Spain is in his fifth season as head coach of the women's soccer program at Minot State. Spain has done impressive work in his four seasons with the team, sporting a highly successful 42-27-9 record. Last season, Spain led the Beavers to their second consecutive birth in the NSIC postseason tournament. In 2012, the Beavers won the NSIC tournament and claimed the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. Sarah McNulty leads U-Mary in her third season as the head coach of the Marauders. McNulty is very familiar with the Marauder culture, as she was honored as a three-time All-American during her time as a player at U-Mary. Minnesota-Crookston is led by third year head coach Joe Alianiello in 2014. Alianiello continues to turn around a program that didn't have much success before he was named coach. Two Golden Eagles were given All-NSIC honors in 2013. Bemidji State is led by long-tenured head coach Jim Stone. Stone has managed to miss the NSIC tournament just once in the past 10 seasons.
RANKINGS: No teams competing against the Beavers this week find themselves in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. None of the teams, including the Beavers, received votes from the coaches.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State held their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 11 and tallied their first win of the season in exciting fashion. After playing Southern Nazarene to a 0-0 draw in regulation, it took the Beavers'
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) just six minutes to secure the victory for Minot State in overtime. Playing their third game in seven days, the Beavers success ended when Central Missouri visited Minot, N.D. and walked away with a 2-0 victory on Saturday, Sept. 13. Minot State struggled to hold possession and the Jennies proved to be too strong over the entire course of the match.
NOTING THE MARAUDERS: Southern Nazarene and Central Missouri not only played Minot State on their trip up north, but both teams stopped in Bismarck, N.D. to play U-Mary. The Marauders did well in their first match of the week, drawing the No. 21 ranked Jennies. The weekend match up with Southern Nazarene proved to be even better for the Marauders when they knocked off the Crimson Storm 4-1. Andrea Muller led the way for the Marauders, recording a goal and an assist in the contest.
NOTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES: Minnesota-Crookston began NSIC play on Tuesday Sept. 9 when they took the field against Bemidji State. In a game soaked by rain, the Golden Eagles were unable to dig out a victory dropping the contest 3-1. Crookston hoped to regroup as they travelled to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to play Northern Michigan, but were unable to do so in a 2-1 loss. A late Northern Michigan goal in the 75th minute proved to be the difference in the non-conference match.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Bemidji State opened NSIC play with a promising 3-1 over Minnesota-Crookston on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The Beavers took a break from NSIC action when they travelled to Missouri to play Missouri Western State and Northwest Missouri. Bemidji came up short in their first game of the road-trip, dropping an overtime thriller on a shot from 30 yards out in the 95th minute of play. The Beavers got back on track though when they took the field against Northwest Missouri. Sarah Stram came away with the game-winning goal.
SERIES HISTORY: Minot State and U-Mary have played each other just five times in their programs' history and the series is quite even. U-Mary holds a slight 2-1-2 advantage with the most recent match-up resulting in a draw. Minnesota-Crookston leads the all-time series against Minot State with a 2-1-1 record. The teams played to a 0-0 tie in 2013. Minot State holds a 4-2 edge of Bemidji State, but Bemidji got the best of MSU in 2013 with a 2-1 win.
KINK IN THE ARMOUR:
Kelli Creese (So., D, La Verne, Calif.), Minot State's only All-NSIC selection in 2013, suffered a shoulder injury in the first half of play against Southern Nazarene and proceeded to finish the match, but the injury proved to be much more severe than Creese showed on the field. The sophomore defender will likely miss the remainder of the season for the Beavers leaving a gap to be filled on the backline.
JAMIE MAC ATTACKS:
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) continues to impress in her final season as a Minot State Beaver. The senior forward scored the game winning goal for the Beavers in an overtime victory against Southern Nazarene, notching her first goal of the season.
