Beavers fall in double overtime

Minot State has chances to earn road win, but come up short

FAYETTE, Iowa – Minot State University men's basketball hit two huge 3-pointers to force both overtime and a second overtime.

But, Upper Iowa regrouped both times.

The Peacocks outscored Minot State 12-6 in the second extra session to hold off the Beavers in an exciting 107-101 double overtime win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Friday at Dorman Gymnasium.

"It was a good basketball game. Those who came tonight certainly got their money's worth," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "There was a stretch in the first half where we didn't do some things we talked about this week and let them stretch it to eight or so, but then we battled back. It was a basketball game after that."

After Upper Iowa (11-6 overall, 7-4 NSIC) took an eight point lead with 10:22 of the first half, the game tightened up. Neither team led by double figures and the game featured six lead changes and six ties.

The two biggest ties came on a free throw by UIU's Bo Pagel with 10 seconds to play in regulation and MSU's Michael Pelo's (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) triple with 18 seconds to play in overtime as both teams staved off losses at that point.

"Our guys did most of what we asked them to. We had some big shots in big situations," Murken said. "We just didn't have quite enough finishes and quite enough stops to win the game. This one is a tough one for the guys."

The Beavers (9-8 overall, 4-7 NSIC) had two big chances to complete a comeback late in regulation. First, Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) nailed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds to play to give Minot State a 87-86 lead, completing a quick 11-5 run over the final 2:50 of regulation. MSU couldn't get a stop on the ensuing Upper Iowa possession, but Pagel hit just one of two free throws to tie the game at 87 giving Robinson another open look for the win just before the buzzer, but he just missed it.

"We talked about commitment today and we had that tonight," said Murken. "I don't think anyone feels like we didn't give it our all. I'm really proud of how we played, proud of our execution, proud of our fight and proud of where our program is going. Yeah, we want to win these types of games, but you see the progression."

MSU had its biggest lead of the game in overtime after Thomas Korf (Sr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) opened the extra session with a 3 of his own and Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored in the paint for a 92-87 lead with just 3:51 to play.

But the Peacocks didn't go away and outscored MSU 8-3 over the next 3:30 of overtime, setting up the Pelo 3 to force the second OT.

Grant Lang led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and added six assists for Upper Iowa. He was one of five Peacocks in double figures. Pagel chipped in with 17 points and Jarrod Gamble added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win.

Minot State countered with five in double figures, two more with eight points, two double-doubles and nearly a third.

Robinson led the Beavers with 21 points and added 10 rebounds and two assists. Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) scored 19 points and added four rebounds and four assists. Pelo hit 5 of 7 3-pointers for 17 points, while Korf and Prosser each scored 11. Prosser notched a double-double with 11 rebounds. Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) nearly netted his first double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points.

The Beavers will have to regroup in a hurry as they travel to Winona, Minn., for a 6 p.m. matchup with Winona State Saturday.
