Beavers shoot to a win

Minot State's offense rolls to 97 points; Thomas Korf reaches milestone

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's offense broke out.

The Beavers hit 12 of 23 3-pointers and shot 50.8 percent from the field to earn a 97-89 win over St. Cloud State in NSIC men's basketball Saturday in front of 1,367 fans at the Minot State Dome.

It was an extra special night for senior forward Thomas Korf (St. Cloud, Minn.) as he knocked down 5 of 6 triples, scored 19 points in a win against his hometown college and passed 1,000 career points in his four-year career. He is the 14th MSU player to reach the milestone in school history.

"Great game for TK," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "He's really a self-made player. He used to be a good shooter, now he's a great shooter and can do some other things off the bounce. He's turned into a good defender. The first meeting I ever had with him I talked about how bad he was at defense and now he's turned into our best team defender. I'm really proud of him. His hard work is unparalleled."

MSU (10-10 overall, 5-9 NSIC) stretched an impressive 14-point lead at 33-19 into what looked like a potential blowout with a 7-0 run sparked by Korf. He nailed a 3-pointer and hit two free throws and Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) knocked down two more free throws for a 40-19 edge with 3:42 to play in the half.

SCSU (11-9, 7-7) made a run late in the half to get it to a 13-point MSU lead at halftime. And, the Huskies never went away in the second half either, cutting the halftime lead to under 10 multiple times, including getting it to six at 75-69 on three free throws by Jordan Poydras with just over five minutes to play. Poydras led all scorers with 31.

But MSU had another run in them as Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) hit a free throw, a driving layup and a 3-pointer around another Korf triple to push the lead back to double figures with 2:39 to go.

Robinson was brilliant offensively as he mixed in two 3-pointers, 5 of 8 free throw shooting and 10 of 16 from the field for a career-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist.

"I liked our energy the whole game, especially early. Everett is a big key to that. He's a big energy player – he loves playing the game," Murken said. "He got off to a great start and I think that was kind of key to get off to that good start tonight. Obviously I feel like we've been playing some good basketball, but we've come up a little short our last few games so it helps to get off to a good start and get a little bit more bounce in your step."

Three other Huskies' players reached double figures with Eddie Alcantara scoring 15 and Connor Niehaus and Donnell Cegers 12 apiece in the loss.

Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) hit three more 3s and went 6 for 6 from the line for 17 points and Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) and Prosser each scored 11 for MSU. Rudolph finished with six rebounds. Minot State had a huge edge in bench points as the Beavers outscored SCSU 32-12 with Pelo, Rudolph and Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) combined for the 32.

MSU finished with 19 assists on the night as Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) finished with eight assists and Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) had five rebounds, five points and four assists.

MSU continues its homestand with two games at the Dome next weekend.
