MSU returns home to face Northern State in first division game

THIS WEEK: Minot State plays host to Northern State during its annual Hall of Fame weekend, taking on the Wolves at 6 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium. There will be a ceremony enshrining the 2015 class of Genevieve (Binsfeld) Hanson, Willie McCollum, LeeAnn Pekovitch and Mike Tighe at halftime of the game.

RECORDS: The Beavers (0-4, 0-4 NSIC) lost their previous game 41-17 against Augustana. Northern State (0-4, 0-4) is coming to Minot after a home loss against Sioux Falls last week.

COACHES CORNER: Minot State's head coach is Tyler Hughes, who is in his second season at the helm. He is 1-10 at Minot State and 21-14 overall as a head coach, all at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where he coached from 2011-12. Hughes spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach with Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Tom Dosch is in his sixth season as the head coach of Northern State. The 2014 NSIC Coach of the Year led his team to the second best record in the conference last season with a mark of 8-3 including a road record of 5-1. Before joining Northern State Dosch spent two years at Southern Illinois University as a linebackers and special teams coach. During his time with Southern Illinois the team won two Missouri Valley Conference titles. In his first head coaching job, with Jamestown College from 2004-07, Dosch tallied 25 wins and 17 losses. With nine seasons as a head coach Dosch has an overall record of 50-47.

FOLLOW THE BEAVERS: The game is broadcast locally on KCJB 910-AM with Scott Kittell calling the play-by-play. Live audio can be accessed online at kcjb.com. Minot State Athletics also is active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube with all feeds accessible through the home page.

RANKINGS: Neither team is ranked in either the American Football Coaches Association Poll or the D2Football.com polls.

RECENT HISTORY: In a 41-17 loss at Augustana College last week the Beavers struggled to get their offense going early. By the time MSU reached the end zone Augustana had already secured a 21-0 lead. Scoring with just 1:58 left in the first half it looked as though Minot State would head into the half down by 14. That was until the Vikings drove 75 yards in one minute and 22 seconds to reach the goal line for the fourth time. With a more even 13-10 point differential in the second half, in favor of Augustana, the Beavers found a way to keep the game from getting too far out of hand with the help of a 86-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Romanski (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.) to Porter Sturm (Sr., WR, Roy, Mont.). Northern State traded turnovers with Sioux Falls in a 28-10 loss at home. With two interceptions thrown by NSU redshirt-freshman quarterback Kyle Lavand and the Wolves defense forcing two turnovers of their own with a pick and a fumble recovery the two teams ended even in the turnover ratio stat. But Sioux Falls offense was too much outgaining Northern State 431 yards to 262.

OVERALL SERIES: In a series dating back to 1953 Minot State trails Northern State 8-7-1.

LAST TIME OUT: While Minot State was in a similar position last season going into its fifth game of the year at 0-4 against Northern State, the Wolves were in a much different spot sporting a 2-2 record. After winning its home game 42-14, Northern State left the stadium with a winning record. Porter Sturm scored both of the Beavers touchdowns with six receptions and 77 yards. NSU led in rushing and passing yards to outgain Minot State 444 yards to 293. With a turnover difference of three to zero MSU gave the ball up too often to stay in the game.

NOTING THE WOLVES: After a successful 8-3 season in 2014 Northern State already has more losses in four games than they did all last year. Despite having close games, their largest loss of the season came from a 17-point defeat against Minnesota State, the Wolves have not been able to keep their score higher than their opponents when the clock runs out. With a freshman quarterback leading their offense, NSU is averaging 281 yards per game. Kyle Lavand, a redshirt-freshman, has thrown at least one interception in all four games so far this year.

QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL: The Beavers have gone four weeks without starting the same quarterback two weeks in a row. In week one, senior Zac Cunha (Rocklin, Calif.) came out of the game with a season ending injury and was replaced by Lucas Romanski (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.). Romanski started in week two, but did not perform well enough to keep the job. In week three true freshman Isaiah Weed (Bonney Lake, Wash.) was given the job of leading the Beavers offense. Weed was injured in practice the following week so Romanski was once again given the nod. This week may be the first week a QB starts two weeks in a row as it looks like Romanski will start.

BURYING THE BALL: With punter Aaron La Deaux (K/P, Jr., Port Orchard, Wash.) going down with an injury in the third game of the season after averaging 44.54 yards per punt JoseLuis Moreno (K, Fr., San Lorenzo, Calif.) came in to replace him. Moreno, in his first appearance in a game as a Beaver, only averaged 29.6 yards per punt on five attempts. But in his second game, after a week of practice, Moreno bounced back averaging 41.2 yards per punt with three punts inside the 20 and one punt over 50 yards. With these two coffin corner kickers Minot State currently ranks second in the NSIC in punting averages at 40.6 yards.

BALANCED ATTACK: Despite trailing at many points this season head coach Tyler Hughes has stuck to a balanced offensive attack only passing the ball more times than running it once this season against Augustana. With 127 rushing attempts and 119 passing attempts in four games this year the Beavers have not panicked when behind and began passing the ball in a lopsided fashion.

BY THE NUMBERS

0: Fourth-down conversions allowed by the MSU defense. Minot State is the only team in the NSIC that has not allowed a fourth-down conversion four weeks into the year.

3: Touchdowns scored by players not named Porter Sturm (WR, Sr., Roy, Mont.). All rushing touchdowns, Lucas Romanski (QB, Jr., San Ramon, Calif.), Jarvis Mustipher (RB, Jr., Melbourne, Fla.) and Charles Hall (RB, Jr., Hinesville, Ga.) are the only other Beavers to get into the end zone this season.

569: All-purpose yards from wide receiver Porter Sturm (Sr., Roy, Mont.). Sturm ranks third in the NSIC in all-purpose yards. He also ranks fourth in receiving yards with 342.
