NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT: The fourth seeded Minot State and fifth seeded Winona State will play each other on November 13. The winner of that match will then play the top seeded Central Missouri November 15. Central Missouri will host both contests.
RECORDS: Minot State (15-4-1, 12-2-1 NSIC) won in the first round of the NSIC Tournament against Bemidji State and lost in the second round against Augustana. Winona State (13-5-3, 9-4-2 NSIC) won its first game of the NSIC Tournament against St. Cloud State and upset Minnesota State in a shootout before falling in the NSIC Championship game to Augustana. Central Missouri (19-2, 9-2 MIAA) won all three of its games in the MIAA Tournament to be crowned tournament champions.
COACHES CORNER:
Jason Spain is in his sixth season as head coach of the women's soccer program at Minot State. Spain has done impressive work in his four seasons with the team, sporting a highly successful 52-34-11 record. Last season, Spain led the Beavers to their third consecutive birth in the NSIC postseason tournament. In 2012, the Beavers won the NSIC tournament and claimed the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. Ali Omar is in 21st season with Winona State. With 287 wins in his first 20 season Omar has led his team to 11 NSIC Championships and six NSIC tournament titles. Winona State won eight consecutive conference titles from 2004-11 under his command. The Warriors have gone 168-19-8 (.882) in conference games with six undefeated seasons since Omar has joined the program. Brian Diaz is in his third season as the head coach of the Upper Iowa soccer team. Prior to joining the Peacocks Diaz was an assistant coach at the University of South Alabama for five years. Diaz has coached his team to a 26-12-1 record in his first two season. Lewis Theobald is in his ninth season as the head coach of Central Missouri. Theobald has been named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Coach of the Year seven times. With a record of 130-23-17 in his first eight years he is the third-winningest active coach in Division II women's soccer with an .815 winning percentage. Before being named the head coach Theobald spent time as an assistant coach at the Division I level with Indiana State.
RANKINGS: Central Missouri is the No. 8 ranked team in the November 10 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II. Minot State received votes in the poll while Winona State is unranked. Minot State is the fourth ranked team in the Central Division in the NCAA Division II rankings matching them up the fifth ranked team, Winona State. The winner of the matchup will take on top seeded Central Missouri.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: With a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State in the first round of the NSIC Tournament, Minot State tied its record for most wins in a single season at 15. With 14 regular season wins the Beavers had already broken their record for most regular season wins. Minot State has seen record breaking offensive play this season. Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris, Calif.) leads the team with 14 goals and a total of 34 points, both school records.
NOTING THE WARRIORS: Winona State surprised many with their shootout win over Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament. Making their way to the NSIC Championship game, along with their regular season play, the Warriors earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Regionals. Winona State plays a strong defense like Minot State, as the two have tied for the third fewest goals allowed in the Northern Sun with 15 apiece. The Warriors lead the NSIC in shutouts along with Minnesota State and Augustana with 11.
NOTING THE JENNIES: Central Missouri has seen a lot of success both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Scoring an average of almost three goals per game the Jennies have a total of 61 goals on the year while only allowing their opponents to score nine. Central Missouri plays a relatively clean game with just six yellow cards on the season to its opponents nine. The Jennies have been able to create their own goals this season only recording 37 assists on their 61 goals.
SERIES HISTORY: With a win on October 3, Minot State was able to take a 3-2 series lead against Winona State. On September 12, Central Missouri increased its lead over Minot State to 3-0-1.
LAST TIME OUT: Minot State was able to defeat Winona State earlier this season with a score of 4-0.
Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris, Calif.) was able to score two goals for the Beavers while a total of seven Beavers were able to record at least one point. Winona State failed to record a single shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes and only took five shots overall. Playing the then No. 8 Central Missouri, Minot State lost in a 1-0 game earlier this year. Despite the Beavers recording two more shots on goal, they were unable to get one to hit the back of the net resulting in a loss.
SUCCESS WITH ASSISTS: The Beavers have seen a lot of success while passing the ball this season with a team single-season record of 29 assists. The previous record, set in 2010, was 21. Chloe Metlon (F, Jr., Fleet, England) and
Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris, Calif.) have led the team with five and four assists, respectively. There are four MSU players with three assists and two more with two.
DEFENSIVE PRESENCE: With defenders
Haley Lolmaugh (Sr., Phelan, Calif.),
Breanne Hatfield (Sr., Manteca, Calif.) and
Ashley Franco (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) starting in all 20 games this season for the Beavers, Minot State has been able to hold opponents to the fewest shots on goal in the conference. Lolmaugh leads the team with 1,781 minutes played while Franco is second with 1,729 and Hatfield is third with 1,725. All three of those marks are good enough for the most in MSU history.
BY THE NUMBERS.523: Shot on goal percentage by the Beavers. With 160 shots on goal and 306 shots taken Minot State lands over half of their shots on goal.
.392: Shot on goal percentage allowed by the Beavers. With 62 shots on goal of the 158 shots allowed the Minot State defense has kept the average goals allowed per game to 0.75.
104: Corner kicks taken by Minot State. Once again, with strong defensive play, the Beavers have prevented opponents offenses from succeeding allowing just 56 corner kicks.
