Beavers lock down UMC

Minot State holds Minnesota Crookston to just eight field goals in each half in win

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's defense put a lockdown on Minnesota Crookston much of the night.

The Beavers allowed just eight field goals in both the first and second halves to roll to a 69-52 win over the Golden Eagles in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball game Friday night at the Minot State Dome.

UMC nearly ended up scoring more from the free-throw line (11) than from the field (16) in the second half. The Beavers (13-12 overall, 8-11 NSIC), held UMC (8-17, 5-14) to just 33 percent shooting for the game.

But early on, it was MSU's missed offensive opportunities and a couple quick 3s by UMC that had the Golden Eagles up 10-5.

"I thought their possessions took away a little bit of our energy there early – we quit talking we quit pressuring the ball on the defensive end," MSU head coach Matt Murken said. "Offensively we took some quick shots. We had OK shots, not bad shots, but we weren't working for great shots and making them work defensively."

Minot State settled in from there, holding UMC to just 15 points over the final 15:45 of the half.

Meanwhile, the Beavers started to heat up behind their big man – 6-foot-8 Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.), who scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half.

"Lamont came back in and we started getting him a lot of touches deep and finished a lot of shots and that started a run for us," Murken said. "From there on out we played the style of basketball we like to play – bouncing around, talking, high fiving each other, flying around the court. When we play that way we're a lot more successful."

MSU stretched a 38-25 lead at the break into a 26-point advantage on a 3-pointer by Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) off a feed from Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) that capped a 20-7 run.

Robinson was solid for the Beavers as he had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists to pace MSU.

UMC had two in double figures, paced by Tyler West's 11. Kevin Larson added 10 points and both West and Larson finished with three rebounds. The Golden Eagles had five players with three rebounds apiece as their leader in the category as MSU held a commanding 41-27 advantage on the boards.

The Beavers also had a huge 38-14 advantage in the paint as Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) joined Prosser and Robinson in double figures with 10 points and added seven rebounds off the bench. Korf and Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) hit for eight and seven respectively for MSU.

Minot State finishes off its final regular season home game Saturday, playing host to Bemidji State starting at 6 p.m. at the Dome.
