ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minot State University survived a roller coaster ride down the stretch.
The Beavers came back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to force overtime, only to have a basket waived off at the end of the first overtime, to eventually pull away for a 99-91 double overtime win at Concordia-St. Paul Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball at the Gangelhoff Center.
Minot State (12-11, 7-10 NSIC) outscored the Golden Bears (14-8, 10-6) 14-6 in the extra session, mainly behind free throws by
Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.). Korf hit 9 of 10 free throws in the game and was a perfect 4 of 4 in the second overtime to score a game-high 26 points. MSU improved to 1-1 in double overtime games and is 2-1 in extra session contests this year.
The Beavers looked to have the win in overtime as
Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) found
Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) who scored at the buzzer, but the play was waived off on an instant replay. It turned out the Golden Bears capped a 5-0 run in the final 30 seconds to force a second overtime.
"We are starting to believe in one another, we are learning how to win, and I'm impressed in the belief and effort," said MSU head coach
Matt Murken. "I thought the shot (at the end of OT by Rudolph) was late, but told them we have outplayed them over the last nine minutes and we will outplay them over the next five."
It was all MSU after the three minute mark in the second overtime as MSU held CU to just six points. Meanwhile, the Beavers were stellar from the line in the second overtime, hitting 7 of 8 to pull away.
"We had chances to put them away, but they kept coming," Murken said. "It was a great game to watch and a great win. Thomas missed a couple open 3s, but he hit some big ones when they counted and hit those free throws in overtime when we needed them."
MSU outshot CU 47.1 percent to 37.7 percent and outscored the Golden Bears 42-24 from beyond the arc, but Concordia-St. Paul finished with 16 offensive rebounds. The rebound total was largely in CU's favor early, but it tightened up late as it ended with just a 46-45 margin in favor of the home team.
The game was tight most of the way until a little run late in the first half and extended into the second half by the Golden Bears. They turned a 46-41 halftime lead into a 60-48 lead on a tip in by Nuni Omot with 13:20 to play in the game.
MSU countered with a Rudolph jumper, a
Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) 3-pointer and another Rudolph layup to shave the lead to 60-55 three minutes later and it remained close the rest of the game.
Concordia-St. Paul had four in double figures led by Terez VanPelz with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Josh Monry earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Omot added 18 points and five rebounds for the Golden Bears.
Korf was joined in double figures by four other Beavers. McDonald had 20 points, including a huge 3 early in the second overtime, and added seven assists and four rebounds.
Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Pelo both scored 12 points, while Rudolph added 11.
Robinson finished with just six points on offense, but pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and added five assists in the win.
"Everett hasn't played very well in the last three games and he will tell you as much," Murken said. "But he continues to play hard, you don't question that, and he did a lot of little things for us tonight."
MSU will have another tough road game as they travel to Minnesota State Saturday to face the Mavericks who received votes in the latest coaches poll at 6 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
