Beavers upended on Hardy's milestone night

Minot State starts slow, can't recover; Katie Hardy scores 1,000th career point

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minot State University was ice cold to start the game and never fully recovered.

The Beavers hit only one field goal in the first five minutes of the game as Concordia-St. Paul pulled away throughout the game for an 80-45 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at the Gangelhoff Center.

The loss spoiled another milestone for the Minot State women's team as senior Katie Hardy (F, Fairview, N.D.) became the second player this season to reach 1,000 career points as she led the Beavers with 10 in the game. Hardy, who now has exactly 1,000 in her four-year career, becomes the 13th member of the exclusive club. She joins senior Christina Boag (F, Tamworth, Australia) who reached the milestone earlier in the season.

Hardy and Boag were the only two MSU (9-14 overall, 4-13 NSIC) players who didn't struggle from the field and Minot State shot just 28.6 percent in the game. The duo combined for 18 points and seven rebounds, shooting 7 for 14 – the rest of the team combined for just 9 of 42 from the field. The Beavers did not hit a 3-pointer on 13 attempts.

Both teams were cold early on as neither team scored in the first three minutes of the game and when Hardy hit MSU's first basket nearly five minutes in, the Beavers trailed just 4-2.

But the Golden Bears (12-10 overall, 8-8 NSIC) heated up from there, going 33 for 61 in the game for 54.1 percent and knocked down 8 of 16 3s. CSP outscored Minot State 24-0 from beyond the arc.

Caitlyn Russell paced five CSP players in double figures with 16, while Anika Whiting added 14 points and six rebounds. Mishayla Jones had a solid game for the Golden Bears with 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the win.

Along with Hardy, Alex Haley (So., G, Libertyville, Ill.) reached double figures as she went 6 for 7 from the free-throw line for 10 points. Sarah Lester (Jr., G, Frenchtown, Mont.) added nine points and seven rebounds for the Beavers.

Minot State will look to regroup Saturday as they travel to Minnesota State for a 4 p.m. game.
