Beavers bats go cold against SMSU

Young and Hammerl recorded multi-hit games in the Beavers 9-3 loss

TUCSON, Ariz. – After defeating Southwest Minnesota State 10-3 just two days ago, the Beavers fell victim to the Mustangs Wednesday night by a nearly flip-flopped score of 9-3 at the Tucson Invitational.

"We just didn't do a very good job offensively," Minot State head coach Brock Weppler said. "We did not have very many quality at bats. We had about five or six innings of at bats that were almost wasted where we weren't getting anything accomplished."

The Beavers showed promise early as Jared Young (Fr., UTL/P, Prince George, British Columbia) continued his hot hitting and drilled a home run to right field putting Minot State ahead 1-0 after one.

But, after tying the game up at 2-2 on a Nicholas Hammerl (Sr., 2B/SS, West Peoria, Ill.) in the bottom of the 5th, the Beavers' bats went cold.

With runners on second and third and no outs in the bottom of the 7th, Minot State had a chance to tie the game up as they trailed 4-2 at the time, but Concordia's Jake Leighton struck out three straight Beavers retiring the side unharmed.

A bases clearing double and a two-run home run in the top of the 9th inning for SMSU put the game out of reach. The Beavers tacked on a third run in the bottom of the 9th.

Hammerl and Young were the only Beavers to record two or more hits in the contest. Kyle Williamson (Fr., OF, Aurora, Ore.), Jesse Goertzen (Jr., 1B/P, Steinbach, Manitoba) and Brad Rolff (Sr., INF, North Folk, Calif.) each recorded one hit.

Josh Larsen (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) made the start for Minot State making it through five innings giving up just one earned run.
With the loss, Minot State falls to 2-5 overall and 2-2 at the Tucson Invitational.

Up next for the Beavers is a game with Simpson College set for 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 12.
