CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University fell twice in its first two games on their annual spring trip to Florida.
But the way MSU lost the two games were worlds apart.
Minot State couldn't find a way to close out Central Missouri, falling 5-3 in 10 innings in the day game and didn't give up an earned run in a 6-4 loss to Urbana University in the nightcap.
"It was a frustrating way to finish because we played pretty well in the first game, but didn't play very clean in the second one," said MSU head coach
Bill Triplett. "If you can't throw it and you can't catch it, you aren't going to win."
In game 1, Minot State (11-4 overall) had plenty of chances to put away Central Missouri, but couldn't lock the Jennies down.
The Beavers carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, but Central Missouri scored twice in the inning to force extras. The Beavers held in the top of the eighth, but couldn't get a runner on second home after starting the inning with one on due to the international tie-breaking rule.
The Jennies (9-5) scored one in the top of the ninth, but Minot State countered that as
Alyssa Cornejo (So., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) drove in a tying run. The Beavers loaded the bases later in the inning, but UCM got out of the jam.
In the 10th, UCM scored twice to put the pressure on and MSU couldn't match this one as the Jennies' starter Jakki Prater settled in and got stronger as the day went on, finishing with three runs and eight hits over 10 innings.
The Beavers opened things up with two runs as
Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) doubled and scored on a hit by
Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) and Hill scored on a
Sarah Nicks (So., C, Grossmont, Calif.) RBI single.
Lorimor was solid in the circle despite the loss as she went 10 inning, giving up 11 hits and five earned, although just two of them were earned. She snapped a six-game personal winning streak as the Beavers fell for the first time in eight games.
"Mindy pitched well enough to win. We had our chances and didn't get that one key hit late," said Triplett.
Grant finished with three hits and scored a run. Cornejo added two hits and Hill and Nicks each had a hit and drove in a run for MSU.
In the final game of the night, MSU held a 2-0 lead as both runs were scored by Grant who walked stole second before being driven in by
Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) in the first inning and singled, stole second and scored on an RBI by
Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) in the third.
But Urbana (4-6 overall) scored three runs on a three-base error in the bottom of the third inning and tacked on three more on three MSU errors in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
The Beavers battled back with two in the sixth with RBIs by Cornejo and Hill in the sixth and MSU had two runners on in the seventh, but couldn't get the equalizer.
"We battled back and had a chance," Triplett said. "We were a key hit away again, but in this one, we let it get too far, let them get too big of a lead. But I liked how are team kept battling late."
Jenn Spencer (Fr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) pitched in relief in two different stints and was saddled with the loss. She gave up just four hits and three runs, all unearned. Lorimor also pitched three innings, giving up just one hit, but also gave up three unearned runs. Urbana's Coutney Moore earned the win, while Madeline Phillips earned a save.
Cygan went 3 for 4 in the game and drove in a run. Bell had two hits and drove in one for the Beavers.
MSU is back on the field Friday, taking on University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown at 1 p.m. and Bowdoin College at 3 p.m.
