Beavers get back to winning ways

Minot State pitchers solid as MSU wins two on day 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University got back to their winning ways.

Minot State pitching gave up just two runs and six hits in two games to sweep games over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Bowdoin College (Maine) Friday at Hancock Park.

"The sun came up today and it was a whole different team out there," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "We were in control of both games all day and in doing so, we got to rest a few players.

The Beavers starting pitching duo of Mindy Lorimor (Sr., P, Thurman, Iowa) and Jenn Spencer (So., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) were especially tough on opposition batters as the two combined for 11 innings pitched, giving up just five hits and one run on the day.

"Lorimor and Spencer were both good in the circle and several players had timely hits," Triplett said. "What a difference a day makes."

In game 1, Lorimor gave up just one ball to the outfield in five innings. It turned out to be the only hit she gave up as UP-Johnstown finished with two hits, collecting a fifth- and seventh-inning single. Lorimor ran her record to 9-3 on the year with five innings of shutout ball as she struck out seven of the 16 batters faced.

Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) was again tough to keep off the base paths and tough to keep from stealing bases. She went 3 for 4 at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases, her 13th and 14th of the year. Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) drove in two runs and went 3 for 4 at the plate, while Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) went 2 for 4 and Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) drove in two.

Spencer was nearly as solid in game 2 as she finished with six innings pitched, giving up just four hits and one earned run, while striking out four. She gave way to Kendall Becker (So., P, Earl Grey, Saskatchewan), who pitched her second perfect inning of the day in relief, to lock the game down.

MSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings as Hill cranked a towering 2-run home run into a stiff breeze to make it 5-0 in the third. Hill went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, while Bell was also 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs. Burdette, Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) and Leyna Downey (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont.) all drove in runs.

The Beavers have two more games Saturday, taking on Ferris State and Northwood University (Mich.) at 5 and 7 p.m.
