Lorimor pitches Beavers to two more wins

MSU runs record to 15-4 with wins over Ferris State and Northwood University

CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University's Mindy Lorimor (Sr., P, Thurman, Iowa) was tough in the circle, twirling 13 innings to pace the Beavers to a pair of wins.

Lorimor shut down Ferris State, tossing six innings of shutout ball in a 6-0 win, and then gutted out seven innings in the night cap, topping Northwood University 5-4 in nonconference NCAA Division II softball Saturday at the National Training Center Field.

The pitching performances paced Minot State to two more wins – its third and fourth wins in a row in Florida – pushing the Beavers record to 15-4 overall.

Lorimor cruised to the win in game 1 over Ferris State as she scattered six hits, striking out seven batters against just two walks. She was spotted five runs in the third and rolled from there.

The Beavers got the five runs as they manufactured the first two with a pair of singles by Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) and Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) and then a two-run double by Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.). Cygan scored on a double by the Beavers' next batter Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Calif.). MSU finished the inning with two more insurance runs as Leyna Downey (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont.) pounded a home run to right field.

It was plenty for Lorimor and Alyssa Cornejo (So., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) who combined for a six-hitter. Cornejo pitched for the first time since an illness had shut her down in the circle a week ago.

Cygan was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Bell went 2 for 4. Downey and Cygan drove in two each.

In the nightcap, MSU built 4-1 and 5-2 leads and then had to hold on to top Northwood.

The Beavers answered Northwood twice, after NU took a 1-0 lead in the first and after Northwood put up a run in the third. The Timberwolves fought back for two in the sixth to make it interesting, however.

Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) drove in three runs, while Grant went 2 for 3 at the plate. Cygan and Cornejo drove in runs.

Lorimor was wasn't as superb in the second game as she was in game 1, but rose up late, getting a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to lock down her 12th win of the season. She went the distance, giving up six hits, four runs, while striking out three.

The Beavers are off Sunday before getting back on the field Monday with two.
