MSU knocks off No. 25 Vikings, sweeps day in Florida

Minot State shuts out both Augustana College and MSU Moorhead on day 5

CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University knocked off No. 25 ranked and fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Augustana College 7-0 as a part of a sweep of two games in Florida.

MSU also defeated another NSIC team Minnesota State University Moorhead 8-0 in five innings to complete the sweep at Hancock Field Monday.

"The top of the order rally got it done today," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "And what can you say about Mindy (Mindy Lorimor, Sr., P, Thurman, Iowa) and 'PNut' (Alyssa Cornejo, So., UTL/P, Riverside, Calif.)? They were just plain nasty in the circle twirling back-to-back shutouts. It was another great day to be a Beaver!"

The top of the order, Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.), Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) and Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.), combined to go 11 for 17, scored nine runs and drove in 10. Grant scored six runs, while batting a near perfect 5 for 6, while Bell and Cygan drove in five apiece.

In game 1, the Beavers broke out for a four-run fifth inning that opened up what had been a spectacular pitching duel between MSU's Lorimor and Augustana College's Jenelle Trautmann. Trautmann retired the Beavers in order through three, striking out five and gave up just two hits through four with six Ks.

But Lorimor was up to the challenge. Through four innings, she struck out four, allowed just one hit and didn't let a Viking player past second base.

MSU's offense kicked in during a four-run fifth. Bell came through with a bases loaded single scoring Leyna Downey (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont.), who singled to lead off the inning, and Jenn Spencer (So., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba), who walked. Cygan made it 4-0 with a two-out triple, scoring Grant and Bell.

While the Beavers did score three insurance runs, one driven in by Cygan and two more by Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.), Lorimor didn't need it. She pitched out of a two-runner, no-out jam in the fifth, stranded a leadoff double by Trautmann in the sixth, and punctuated the win with a strikeout of Trautman with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Game 2 wasn't nearly as drama filled as MSU scored two in the first, two in the second, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to roll over MSU Moorhead. Cygan drove in runs in the first and second innings, while Bell plated MSU runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

In the circle, MSU's Cornejo gave up just three hits while striking out eight of the 20 batters she faced. She scattered the three hits in three innings, only allowing a runner to reach second base in the first and fifth innings.

The Beavers finish their road swing in Florida Tuesday with a pair of games, taking on Stevenson University and Wayne State University (Mich.).
