TUCSON, Ariz. – Minot State wrapped up the Tucson Invitational Sunday with a pair of games against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents. The Beavers fell in both games.
In the first game of the day, the Beavers looked to get revenge against Concordia St. Paul after losing to the Golden Bears in extra innings earlier this week. Concordia came through once again Sunday morning with a 13-9 win against the Beavers.
Minot State got out to a quick start as
Jared Young (Fr., UTL/P, Prince George, British Columbia) hit a two run single to right field giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Concordia answered right back with four runs of its own in the first inning, though.
Trevor Gust (Sr., C, Minot, N.D.), who drove in five runs on three extra base hits, got the Beavers back in the game in the third inning as he hit a double off the left field wall driving in two.
After taking a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly from
Paul Vogelsang (So., C, Regina, Saskatchewan), Concordia scored the rest of the runs in the game, including two in the seventh and three in the eighth.
In the second game of the doubleheader against St. Cloud State, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the third inning and never looked back on their way to a 13-2 win.
Jesse Goertzen (Jr., 1B/3B, Steinbach, Manitoba) and Young both drove in a run apiece in the defeat.
Five different Beavers recorded a multi-hit game in either of the games.
Brad Rolff (Sr., INF, North Folk, Calif.),
Keith Ailes (Jr., OF/1B, Bozeman, Mont.) and Young all recorded two-hit games against Concordia, while Goertzen recorded his two-hit game against St. Cloud.
The two losses move the Beavers' overall record to 3-8 on the season and they finish 3-5 at the Tucson Invitational.
Despite the losses today, Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler is optimistic with his team going forward.
"Overall I thought we hit the ball fairly well," Weppler said. "Pitching's obviously got to improve but we get back to the conference season and we're going to use guys where we would more normally use them. You're not extending guys out for starts and stuff like that."
Minot State will begin conference play next Saturday, March 21 against Wayne State for a four-game series.
