Bulldogs spoil senior send-off; Schulz reaches milestone

Schulz breaks Minot State single season home run record on senior day

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University baseball team lost its final two games of the season Saturday afternoon to the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, but there were still plenty of reasons to celebrate as the Beavers honored their five seniors and Jordan Schulz (So., OF, Strasbourg, Saskatchewan) broke the single season home run record in Minot State baseball history.

"It's tough to see them go—it's never easy," MSU head coach Brock Weppler said. "But those guys will be successful and they'll move on and do a good job in whatever it is."

Josh Larsen (Sr. P, Surrey, British Columbia), Nick Hammerl (Sr., SS/2B, West Peoria, Ill.) and Brad Rolff (Sr., 3B/SS, North Folk, Calif.) were the first three seniors honored in between Saturday's doubleheader as they each played two seasons for Minot State after transferring from other schools at the conclusion of 2013 season.

Austin Zorn (Sr., P/INF, Bismarck, N.D.) and Trevor Gust (Sr., C/DH, Minot, N.D.) were the final two players honored as they each played four years for the Beavers.

Minot State was unable to use the special day as a rallying call as they fell in game one, 11-7, and game two, 10-5.

Game one was a similar story of games past as Minot State went down early and dug itself too big of a hole to climb back out of.

The Bulldogs held an 8-1 lead after the top of the fourth inning and despite six unanswered runs by the Beavers in the next two innings, MSU was unable to complete the comeback.

The Beavers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the fifth on Schulz's record breaking two-run home run. Schulz's 14th home run of the season broke the previous single season home run record held by Scott Peters.

UMD added two more runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh as the game ended 11-7 in its favor.

After going down 2-0 in the top of the first of game two, Minot State bounced right back scoring two runs of its own in the bottom half of the first inning, but that's as close as it would get to a lead in game two. The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs over the next four innings.

Down 10-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Minot State mounted a small comeback effort as Keith Ailes (Jr., OF/1B, Bozeman, Mont.) hit a solo home run to right center and Kyle Williamson (Fr., OF, Aurora, Ore.) singled up the middle driving in Micah Holmen (Jr., 3B/1B, Minot, N.D.).

Hammerl ended his career in style as he went 4-for-4 in the final game of the season and scored two runs. Schulz and Jared Young (Fr., 2B, Prince George, British Columbia) each recorded two hits in the final game of the season.

With the losses, Minot State ends the 2015 season with an overall record of 11-34 and a conference record of 8-26.
