Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Home streak continues for more MSU firsts

MINOT, N.D. (July 2, 2015) – For the second time in as many days, the Minot State University men's basketball team earned its first win over an opponent in school history. This time coming in a 63-46 win against Winona State.

Last night it was Tyler Rudolph's 27 that pushed the Beavers past the Peacocks. Today it was Michael Pelo's 22 that helped defeat the Warriors. With five of the eight three-pointers made by MSU, Pelo (G, Sr., Charleston, Utah) matched his single-game high, which he hit three times last season. The 22 points was a career best for Pelo.

The crowd, made up of 841 fans, made more noise with every three hit by Minot State as Dominique McDonald (G, Sr., Raleigh, N.C.) made two from far beyond the arc and Rudolph (F, So., Bismarck, N.D.) made one of his own with a hand in his face. McDonald totaled 10 points while Rudolph scored 11 and gathered nine rebounds.

Winona State only made one three in the 40 minutes played, but had a three-point play at the end of the first half that neither head coach Matt Murken nor the fans were happy about.

With 0.2 seconds left on the clock Mark Blacklock secured an offensive rebound for the Warriors and made a motion to shoot as the referees called a foul sending Blacklock to the line to shoot three. Checking the replay system to make sure there was in fact time on the clock the call stood and all three shots were made to put the score at 28-26 at halftime in favor or Minot State.

Coming out of the half the Beavers surrendered the lead with 15:39 remaining in the game, but took the lead back just 18 seconds later and never looked back. Eventually the lead grew to 17 at the end of the game as neither team scored in the final minute.

The victory continues a home winning streak that now sits at five games, including four conference games.

Minot State will play again on January 22 as they begin a four-game road state at Minnesota Duluth. The game is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m.
