ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The Minot State University women's basketball team couldn't hang on against St. Cloud State falling 58-51 after four quarters.
The silver lining of the game was how the young Beavers performed. With a total of 28 points coming off the bench freshmen
Kari Clements (G, Trevor, Wis.),
Shyla Carr (G, Spokane, Wash.) and
Madison Wald (G, Minot State) contributed 22.
"We got great production out of our bench players tonight," said head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "Overall I was very proud of how our team performed tonight. We took a lot of steps in the right direction."
Clements led the team with her 12 points and followed up her four steal performance from the previous game with three steals against the Huskies. Totaling seven steals and forcing 14 turnovers in all the Beavers played well on defense limiting their opponent to under 35 percent shooting, but they themselves also shot under 35 percent.
"We worked really hard defensively and forced them into a lot of uncomfortable shots," Green Gerding said. "We missed some layups and free throws that were the difference in the game."
Minot State earned 10 trips to the charity stripe, but could only tally four points from those shots. Converting both of her free throw attempts was senior
Amanda Sansaver (G, Wolf Point, Mont.) who, with four points and three assists now has a career total of over 300 points, 200 assists and 100 rebounds.
Savana Kingsbury (F, Sr., Omaha, Neb.) led the Beavers with 12 rebounds while adding eight points. Carr tied for the third most team points with
Alex Haley (G, Jr., Libertyville, Ill.) who each scored seven.
Minot State will play again on January 30 at Wayne State College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
