MSU drops road match at No. 6 Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – Minot State University pushed Winona State in sets 2 and 3, but it wasn't enough as the No. 6 ranked Warriors swept MSU 3-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball Saturday.

The Beavers (5-20 overall, 0-16 NSIC) fell 25-11 in set 1, but were much stronger down the stretch, finishing 25-20 and 25-18.

"Game 1 looked like game 1 last night, only this team is a very, very good team," said MSU head coach Ben Kaszeta. "(Winona) served really aggressive, especially in game 1 and took our middles out of the game, making it impossible to run them."

MSU hit negative in the first, with four kills and eight errors, but were much improved after. The Beavers finished the match with 24 kills and just nine errors. However, the Warriors were solid all night, hitting 49 kills compared to just 13 errors total.

"They are a bigger team than we normally see and the block they put up made us make a few more errors than I would have liked," Kaszeta said. "Taylor (Goar) played an awesome game for them. Every time we took something away from her, she changed and made a play in a different way."

Goar finished with 13 kills, two aces and a block to lead the Warriors (22-3, 13-3).

The Beavers countered with seven kills and 11 assists from senior Janelle Nagy. Shelby Spuller added six kills and an ace, while Hayley Swain had five kills and two blocks. Kelsey Dewulf paced MSU with 13 assists. Cindy Pelo had a solid night in the back row, earning 21 digs.

"Cindy played awesome for us," said Kaszeta. "That's two days in a row with over 20 digs."

MSU finishes off their home schedule next week with two ranked opponents as No. 8 ranked Wayne State College and No. 7 Augustana University travel to the Dome Friday and Saturday.
