Beavers can't keep up with No. 4 SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – Minot State University battled No. 4 ranked Southwest Minnesota State in set 1 and 2 but ran into a buzz saw in the Mustangs in the final set, dropping a 3-0 decision in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball Saturday.

It was the final regular season game for both teams.

MSU played well at times early, finishing with just two errors and a .192 hitting percentage in set 1 and smacked 11 kills in set 2, but dropped 25-15 and 25-18 sets. In the final, SMSU turned up the serving pressure to roll to a 25-8 set, hitting .615.

"We played great in games 1 and 2 but it felt like every time we got one point, they would get two," MSU had coach Ben Kaszeta said. "Game 3, a couple of their seniors got on a roll. Taylor (Reiss), the player of the year in the conference, took over and had a little run serving points we couldn't stop."

Reiss finished with a match-high 15 kills and added 11 digs and five aces to pace SMSU (24-4 overall, 18-2 NSIC).

Minot State (5-24, 0-20) got six kills and just one hitting error from Emily Falldorf in the loss. Shelby Spuller and Brileigh Boyce finished with five kills each. Janelle Nagy finished her Beaver career with eight assists, six digs and two kills for MSU.
