Minot State falls to efficient WSC

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University women's basketball pulled down 17 offensive rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome hot shooting by Wayne State College as the Wildcats defeated MSU 75-45 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday at the MSU Dome.

The Beavers (2-9 overall, 0-5 NSIC) had its second-straight big night on the glass, but struggled shooting the ball for the second night in a row. MSU took 17 more shots than Wayne State and outrebounded the Wildcats 17-2 on the offensive end.

"I think we rushed our shots a little. We need to slow down and set people up and be little more disciplined on offense instead of trying to beat someone in a footrace on every play," said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "Basketball is a simple game, but we seem to make it harder."

The Wildcats (7-3, 2-3) were much more efficient on offense as they built a 31-18 halftime lead on just 21 shots from the floor. WSC hit five of their first seven field goals in the first quarter, while MSU was just 2 of 14 from the floor and scored just six in the first.

In the second, WSC broke the Beavers down off the dribble throughout, missing just six times after the break.

"Our defense crumbled in the second half, but part of that could be some of the frustration we are feeling on the offensive end," Green Gerding said. "We played hard, but I'm not sure we handled their pressure."

Paige Ballinger and Maggie Shulte reached double figures for WSC with 17 and 11 points respectively in the win.

Minot State's Madison Wald came off the bench to hit 4 of 5 3-pointers and scored 12 points, while adding five rebounds. Kristal Flowers scored 10 and pulled own four rebounds.

"Maddy and Kristal both played well overall. That's good to see for us," Green Gerding said.

Minot State will look to rebound with one more home conference game before the break, taking on rival University of Mary Saturday at 4 p.m. at the MSU Dome.
