MSU falls in close battle

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Minot State University wrestling team lost 20-18 against Mary despite winning six of the 10 matchups on Friday evening in a nonconfernce dual.

The Beavers got off to a strong start winning three of the first four matches to build a 9-5 lead. Liam Hayden, 125, led the Beavers out of the gate with a 10-7 win over his opponent. Jered Sublet and Cody Haugen, 141 and 149, both also won by decision earning three points each for MSU.

Where Minot State struggled was giving up big points to the Marauders who earned 17 points in the first six competitions with two pins, and a tech. fall victory. Mary's other win came from a 3-1 decision.

MSU finished winning three of the last four matches with Carlos Toledano (174), Keegan Berry (184) and Mitchell Eull (HWT) each winning by decision. It was Eull's first appearance in a dual this season as he rebounded well from injury with a 4-0 victory over his opponent.

The Beavers have split their meetings with the Marauders each of the past two year with both teams winning their home duals. The last time either team won on the road was in February, 2014 when MSU defeated Mary 21-18.

Minot State will host Mary in its first competition after the winter break in the MSU Dome on January 8 at 3 p.m. in an NSIC dual.
