DULUTH, Minn. – Minot State University's
Tyler Rudolph was a buzz saw Saturday night at Romano Gymnasium.
Rudolph scored a game-high 26 points and added 16 rebounds to earn a double-double and reached 1,000 career points to lift the Beavers to a 67-56 win over Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball.
The Beavers (7-7 overall, 3-5 NSIC) won their third NSIC game in their past five conference outing sand evened their overall record on the season. MSU moved into a tie for fourth place in the NSIC North Division.
"Tonight was the type of win that makes you proud as a coach. Sickness, injury, road game – we had a lot to overcome and I thought we played with tremendous grit," said MSU head coach
Matt Murken. "We've got a lot of room for growth with this team, but I love our togetherness and will to improve."
Rudolph surpassed the 1,000 points and 500 rebounds on the weekend. He was 12 of 26 from the field, pulled 14 defensive rebounds and blocked four shots in 33 minutes.
MSU didn't have its best shooting night of the year, but limited UMD (2-10, 2-5) in nearly every aspect. The Beavers held the Bulldogs to 28 percent shooting in the second half and 32 percent for the game, outrebounded UMD 40-31 and held UMD to just one of 13 on 3-pointers in the second half. And, after a night where turnovers hurt the Beavers cause, Minot State finished with just seven miscues, allowing the Bulldogs to score just five points off of turnovers.
Luke Harris finished with 14 points to lead Duluth (2-10, 2-5), while Brandon Myer scored 12 and added five rebounds in the loss.
MSU finished with three in double figures in scoring as
Nathaniel Moore added 14 points and
Nathan Mertens finished with 12. The Beavers only played seven players and six scored. The one who didn't,
Trevor Rothstein, pulled down nine rebounds – four offensive – and added an assist and a steal in 28 minutes.
