CROOKSTON, Minn. – Minot State University kept making small runs at Minnesota Crookston.
The Golden Eagles kept answering with 3-pointers.
UMC hit 12 3-pointers and outscored MSU 36-24 from beyond the arc to knock off the Beavers 78-62 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at Lysaker Gymnasium.
"Yeah, it seemed like every time we got something going they would hit a 3 or get an offensive rebound and a kick out," said MSU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "I didn't think we had enough fight in us tonight. We challenged them after to come out with more fight, more fire, and challenge people."
The Beavers (9-16 overall, 6-13 NSIC) were outscored 21-11 in the second quarter and played catchup the rest of the night. The lead ballooned to as many as 20 in the second half, but MSU kept chipping away.
Those second-half runs were never large enough to get the Beavers back in the game.
Minnesota Crookston hit six 3s in each half, but were 50 percent in the second half, knocking down 6 of 12. That margin, coupled with an 8-0 advantage from the line, gave UMC (16-7, 13-6) its 16th win of the season, tying a school record.
MSU got it to 13 late in the third quarter on a basket by
Sarah Lester (Sr., F, Frenchtown, Mont.) and then to 12 on a layup by
Kari Clements (RFr., G, Trevor, Minn.) late in the fourth quarter, but it never got below double figures in the second half.
UMC finished with four in double figures paced by Allison Hughes' 17 points. Hughes did much of damage from beyond the arc as she finished with 5-of-9 shooting on 3s. Isieoma Odor came off the bench to score 15 point and pulled down seven rebounds in the win.
Lester paced MSU with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. Clements came off the bench to add 10 points – hitting two of the Beavers eight 3-pointers – and added two assists, two steals and a rebound.
Kori Eurich (Jr., G, Pueblo, Colo.) knocked down two more triples for eight points for MSU.
The Beavers will look to rebound at their Minnesota namesake Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) traveling to Bemidji State for the final regular season road game.
