MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University gave up a pair of two-run home runs to trump a two-run shot of their own, falling 4-2 in a five inning, weather shortened game against Upper Iowa in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball Sunday at Herb Parker Stadium.
Game 2 was canceled as well as high winds and cold temperatures forced the change in schedule.
Upper Iowa's Eric Kirgan and Katie Sammons each hit two-run home runs, Kirgan's in the first and Sammons in the second, to stake the Peacocks to a 4-0 lead.
The Beavers (12-21 overall, 1-12 NSIC) got two back with a home run by Alysaa Cornejo (Jr., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) in the second to cut UIU's lead in half. It was Cornejo's fifth home run on the season and her second in as many games.
MSU had the game-tying run on later in the second and again in the fifth – both in scoring position via a stolen base – as
Tylar Holland (Fr., CF, Clancy, Mont.) swiped second in the second and
Jordan Grant (Jr., CF, Adelanto, Calif.) stole her 16th base on the season in the fifth. But the Beavers stranded the runner in both cases.
Brooke Redmond earned the win in relief for Upper Iowa (26-12, 12-4). She worked three innings, giving up just one hit to improve to 14-4. MSU's
Clarissa Ramirez () made just two mistakes in the game as she pitched a five-hitter, but gave up four runs to fall to 3-5.
The Beavers travel to Minnesota State University Moorhead Tuesday for a pair of NSIC games starting at 2 and 4 p.m.
