Huge Fourth Quarter Propels Beavers Past Huskies

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's basketball team overcame a 52-41 deficit after the third quarter by outscoring St. Cloud State 20-6 in the final quarter to earn their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win of the season.

The win improves Minot State's record to 5-6 (2-5 NSIC) on the season while the Huskies drop to 6-4 (3-3 NSIC).

Down 54-48 with 7:36 left in the game, the Beavers rallied for an 8-0 run off a three-pointer from Madison Wald, three free throws from Kristal Flowers and a layup from Kari Clements to cut the SCSU lead to 54-53.

St. Cloud State responded with a three-pointer from Amanda Christianson to give the Huskies a 57-53 lead with 2:55 to play.

Minot State answered with a 7-0 rally over the next two minutes with three free throws from Holly Johnson, a three-pointer from Diondra Denton and a free throw from Clements, giving the Beavers their first lead of the game since early in the second quarter.

The Beavers shot 40 percent from the floor and 10 of 14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter while holding the Huskies to 16.7 percent shooting from the field in the final quarter.

Three Minot State players scored in double figures, as Johnson led the Beavers with 18 points while Wald and Flowers tallied 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Flowers grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to lead the Beavers to a 33-28 rebounding advantage over the Huskies.

Minot State shot 48.8 percent from the floor and assisted on 12 of 21 field goals while limiting St. Cloud State to 36.7 percent shooting from the field.

The Beavers dominated the points in the paint with a 28-14 margin over the Huskies and the MSU defense forced the Huskies to commit 12 turnovers.

Minot State returns to the court tomorrow, as they play host to Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m. in the Minot State Dome.
