MINOT, N.D. -- Senior
Tyler Rudolph scored 13 points to break the Minot State career scoring record, but Upper Iowa shot 72.4 percent from the floor in the second half on its way to a 99-89 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the Beavers on Saturday in the Minot State Dome.
Rudolph hit a jumper from just inside the three-point line at the 11:04 mark of the first half giving him 1,827 career points moving him ahead of Paul Harrell for the top spot in Minot State history. Harrell had occupied the top spot on the career scoring chart for the last 38 years with 1,826 points. With his 13 points, Rudolph now has 1,836 points in his career.
Rudolph finished the game 6-of-14 from the floor and also added 11 rebounds to post a double-double. He also had three assists and two blocked shots in his 38 minutes of play.
Upper Iowa, which improved to 13-12 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC, shot 64.3 percent from the floor for the game. The Peacocks made 21-of-29 shots from the field in the second half and also were 2-of-4 from the three-point line for the game.
The Peacocks placed five players in double figures led by Joe Smoldt and Dennis Austin III who each scored 18 points. Munachiso Okonkwo finished with 17 points, while Kam Rowan had 16 points and Mitchell Eighme finished with 10 points.
Minot State, which dropped to 17-5 overall and 11-5 in conference play, was led by
Luis Ricci Maia who scored a game-high 21 points.
David Akibo finished with 19 points, while
Russ Davis added 11 points.
The Beavers, who lost for the first time all season when leading at halftime, shot 51.6 percent from the floor for the game.
The Peacocks used a 9-0 run early in the second half to take control of the contest.
Ricci Maia drilled a three-pointer for the Beavers to tie the score at 53-53 with 15:58 to play in the game, but the Peacocks then reeled off their 9-0 run to take a 62-53 lead at the 13:20 mark of the second half.
Nathaniel Moore ended the run with a three-pointer for Minot State, but Okonkwo answered with a dunk for the Peacocks upping the lead to 64-56 with 11:16 remaining in the game.
Akibo made one of two free throws to cut the lead to 64-57, but Upper Iowa used a 17-11 run to push the lead to 81-68 with 6:19 left to play in the contest.
Trailing by 12 points, the Beavers got a jumper and a layup from Akibo and a layup by Rudolph to climb to within 83-77 at the 3:45 mark of the second period.
A three-point play by Austin III and a layup by Parker quickly upped the lead to 88-77 at the 2:05 mark of the second.
Minot State got to within 92-87 with 47 seconds remaining in the game, but the Peacocks converted 7-of-8 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold off the Beavers.
Minot State held a 45-42 lead at the intermission as the Beavers shot 54.8 percent from the floor and Davis scored 11 points to pace the offensive attack.
The Beavers now begin their longest road trip of the season as the next four games will be played away from the Minot State Dome. Minot State will venture to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday (Feb. 2) for an 8 p.m. game and then face Sioux Falls on Saturday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m.
