MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's basketball team had five players score in double-figures on Saturday, as the Beavers defeated Upper Iowa 85-57 in the Minot State Dome.
The win propels the Beavers to 11-9 (8-8 NSIC) on the season while the Peacocks fall to 2-20 (0-16 NSIC).
Minot State recorded their second consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekend sweep and extended their winning streak to five games while improving to 9-1 on the season when scoring 70 or more points.
Upper Iowa started the game strong, shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and held a 21-12 lead over the Beavers after the first quarter.
The Beavers opened the second quarter with a 16-4 run to take a 28-25 lead with 5:16 left in the second quarter, as Minot State wouldn't concede the lead for the rest of the game.
Minot State outscored Upper Iowa 29-8 in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 6-0 rally off layups from
Diondra Denton and
Kari Clements and two free throws from Denton to take a 41-29 lead into halftime.
The Beavers carried their momentum into the second half, as Minot State shot 52.9 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent from three-point range in the third quarter to outscore the Peacocks 27-11.
Alyx Fast hit a three-pointer with 3:48 remaining in the game to give Minot State their biggest lead of the game at 81-47. The Peacocks outscored the Beavers 10-4 after that, as Minot State clinched the 85-57 victory.
Minot State shot 44.8 percent from the floor, including a season-high 63.6 percent from three-point range while scoring a season-high 85 points. The Beavers also knocked down a season-high 14 three-pointers and held Upper Iowa to 34 percent shooting.
The Beavers notched dominant advantages over the Peacocks in rebounding (47-27), points in the paint (30-6) and second chance points (13-1).
Mariah Payne tallied 14 points, six rebounds and three assists while Clements scored a season-high 14 points on five of six shooting from the field.
Holly Johnson poured in 13 points along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Madison Wald scored 11 points while Denton added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Kristal Flowers was just short of recording her seventh double-double of the season with nine points and nine rebounds.
Minot State will take their five-game winning streak on the road next weekend, as the Beavers travel to Marshall, Minn. to face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. before taking on Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m.
