ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Senior
Nathaniel Moore scored 14 points, but St. Cloud State used a 21-6 run late in the first half to pull away from Minot State on its way to a 96-60 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory on Saturday in Halenbeck Hall.
A layup by
Tyler Rudolph with 6:09 to play in the first half cut the Huskies lead to 32-23, but St. Cloud State responded with an 11-0 run.
Two free throws by Sean Smith and Gage Davis followed by back-to-back three-pointers by Adam Heede-Andersen and Davis upped the Huskies lead to 43-23 at the 4:15 mark of the opening period.
Minot State, which dropped to 17-9 overall and 12-9 in conference, responded with back-to-back baskets by
Trevor Rothstein and
David Akibo to cut the margin to 43-27, but the Huskies reeled off an 8-0 run to push the lead to 51-27 with 2:12 remaining before halftime.
St. Cloud State, which improved to 20-6 and 16-4 in conference, took a 54-33 lead into the intermission on the strength of shooting 71.4 percent from the floor in the opening period.
The Huskies opened the second half on a 10-0 run to up the lead to 64-33 to squelch any hopes of a Minot State comeback. St. Cloud State led by as many as 40 points in the second half.
St. Cloud State, which shot 65.5 percent from the floor, placed five players in double figures in scoring led by Davis with 22 points. Brindley Theisen scored 14 points and Smith finished with 13 points. Jon Averkamp added 11 points and Jace Kitchen scored 10 points for the Huskies.
Minot State, which made only 1-of-11 three-point attempts, was led by Moore who scored 14 points. Rudolph added 11 points and
Max Cody had 10 points off the bench.
Minot State will close out the regular season at home this week with a pair of NSIC contests. The Beavers will host Minnesota Crookston on Friday (Feb. 16) and Bemidji State on Saturday (Feb. 17).
