Rothstein Sparks Beavers to Win on Senior Day

MINOT, N.D. -- Sophomore Trevor Rothstein scored all 10 of his points in the second half sparking Minot State to an 80-71 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Bemidji State on Senior Day in the Beavers regular season finale on Saturday in the Minot State Dome.

Minot State, which had already secured the No. 3 seed from the NSIC North Division, will host Upper Iowa on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at 8 p.m. in the Minot State Dome in an opening round game of the NSIC / Sanford Health Tournament. It marks the second consecutive season in which the Beavers have hosted an opening round tournament game.

The Beavers trailed 53-44 with 13:50 to play in the second half before Rothstein went to work.

He scored inside on a layup off a feed from Nathaniel Moore to trim the lead to 51-44 with 13:29 to play in the game. Sharif Black answered with a layup for Bemidji State, but on the Beavers next trip Rothstein rebounded a missed three-pointer and then drained a three-pointer to cut the Bemidji State lead to 53-47 with 12:50 remaining in the game.

Following a missed three-pointer by Bemidji State, Rothstein converted a three-point play to trim the Bemidji State lead to 53-50 with 12:17 remaining in the game.

Minot State, which improved to 19-9 overall and 13-9 in the NSIC, climbed to within 53-52 at the 11:31 mark of the second period on a jumper by David Akibo.

Bemidji State stretched the lead to 58-54 on a three-pointer by Christian Pekarek, but Minot State rallied to take the lead on a jumper and a three-pointer by Moore.

When Rothstein re-entered the game for the Beavers the score was tied at 62-62 with 7:46 remaining in the game. He rebounded a missed shot and Luis Ricci Maia connected on a three-pointer later in the possession which put Minot State in front to stay at 65-62 with 6:43 remaining in the second period.

Minot State then used a pair of free throws from Ricci Maia and a three-pointer from Russ Davis to push the lead to 73-64 at the 4:43 mark of the second half.

Rothstein gave Minot State its largest lead of the game at 75-64 when he connected on two free throws with 2:35 to play.

Rothstein was one of five Minot State players to reach double figures in scoring sending the five Beaver seniors out on a winning note in their final regular season appearance in the MSU Dome.

Tyler Rudolph scored a game-high 23 points to lead Minot State, while Ricci Maia finished with 15 points. Davis and Moore each scored 12 points in addition to the 10 points scored by Rothstein.

Bemidji State, which shot 56.0 percent from the floor, was led by Jai'Vionne Green who scored 21 points. Black had 18 points and Logan Bader added 13 points.

Senior Brandon Green, the Beavers defensive stopper, helped slow down the Bemidji State attack in the second half. After Bemidji State shot 68.0 percent from the floor in the first half, Green and his teammates held BSU to just 44.0 percent shooting in the second half.

Minot State trailed for much of the first half and Bemidji State took a 38-31 lead into the intermission after closing the half on a 10-2 run.
