Beaver Rally Comes Up Short in 66-60 Loss vs. Warriors

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit to take a two-point lead with three minutes left, but couldn't hold on, as the Beavers fell 66-60 vs. Winona State in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Wednesday night in the Minot State Dome.

The Beavers end their season with a 14-13 record while the Warriors improved to 15-12 and advance to face Northern State in the quarterfinals on Sunday at the Sanford Health Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Winona State held a 10-point lead after the first quarter before Diondra Denton knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Warrior lead down to 35-31 with two minutes left in the first half.

WSU's Alyssa Jurges hit a three-pointer with 58 seconds left to give the Warriors a 40-31 lead at halftime.

Madison Wald and Kristal Flowers combined to score the first eight points for the Beavers in the second half, as a Flowers layup made it a 43-39 game with six minutes left in the third quarter. WSU held a 9-4 advantage in the remaining six minutes to take a 52-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Minot State scored on seven of their first 10 possessions in the fourth quarter while reeling off a 17-6 run to take a 60-58 lead. Kari Clements hit a three-pointer with 4:02 left to tie the game at 58 before Wald scored on a layup with 3:31 remaining to give Minot State the lead.

Winona State answered with a jumper by Kayla Schaefer to tie the game at 60 with 2:02 left. Both teams went scoreless until Kayla Schaefer hit the go-ahead layup with 45 seconds remaining.

Minot State couldn't answer on the following possession, as the Warriors went four of six from the foul line down the stretch to clinch a 66-60 win over the Beavers.

Minot State shot 42.4 percent from the floor, including 46.7 percent in the fourth quarter while the Warriors shot 45.3 percent from the field.

Minot State finished with a 37-29 advantage in rebounding over Winona State and forced the Warriors into nine turnovers.

Madison Wald led Minot State in scoring with 16 points while shooting 7-14 from the field. Holly Johnson capped her final game at Minot State with her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.

Denton and Flowers also played their final games at Minot State. Denton chipped in nine points and six rebounds while Flowers added seven points and seven rebounds.
