SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Senior
Tyler Rudolph scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but Kevin Krieger hit a three-pointer as time expired to force overtime and Minnesota State outscored the Beavers 12-4 in the extra session to defeat MSU 87-79 in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday in the Sanford Pentagon.
For the second time in as many games this season, Minnesota State rallied to force overtime against the Beavers. In the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 12 in the Minot State Dome, the Mavericks erased a five-point deficit in the final 15 seconds to send the game into overtime. The Beavers closed the overtime period with a 14-1 run to emerge with the 91-83 victory.
On Saturday, the Mavericks turned the tables on Minot State. The Beavers took a 75-72 lead with three seconds to play in regulation after Rudolph connected on a free throw. Following a timeout, the Mavericks heaved a length of the court pass that Krieger caught and dribbled out to the three-point line and knocked down the game-tying basket as the buzzer sounded.
Carlos Anderson opened the overtime with a layup for the Mavericks, but Rudolph tied the score at 77-77 on a layup with 4:29 to play in the extra session.
Minnesota State, which improved to 22-8 on the season, used a 6-0 run to take an 83-77 lead with 2:16 left to play.
Nathaniel Moore hit a jumper to cut the lead to 84-79, but the Beavers would not score again in overtime.
Moore finished with 19 points for the Beavers, while
Russ Davis had 15 points and
David Akibo finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Luis Ricci Maia had nine points, five assists and four rebounds and
Brandon Green had three rebounds.
Krieger led Minnesota State with 19 points, while Charlie Brown scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Cameron Kirksey and Chris Kendrix each had 12 points and Cole Harper added 10 points for the Mavericks.
Minot State, which shot 47.5 percent from the floor, finished the season with a 20-10 overall record. The Beavers concluded the best season since joining NCAA Division II with its first-ever NSICÂ Tournament win and its first-ever trip to the quarterfinals.
Minot State held an early 14-10 lead following a three-pointer by Akibo, but the Mavericks responded with a 12-2 run to take a 22-16 lead at the 10:00 mark of the first half.
Minnesota State led by as many as seven points in the first half before settling on a 38-33 lead at the intermission.
Minot State opened the second half on a 5-0 run and tied the game at 38-38 on a three-pointer by Davis with 18:26 remaining in the second half.
Minnesota State answered with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 46-40 at the 15:55 mark of the second. Seven straight points from Ricci Maia helped the Beavers tie the game at 47-47 with 13:51 to play in regulation.
After a Moore jumper tied the game at 49-49, the Mavericks ripped off a 12-0 run to take a 61-49 lead with 8:11 left in the second period.
As they did all season long, Minot State would answer the challenge.
Moore scored eight straight points to cut the Mavericks lead to 61-57 with 6:18 remaining in the game. Hendrix and Moore exchanged free throws and Brown connected on a jumper giving Minnesota State a 65-59 lead at the 5:19 mark of the second half.
Two free throws by Davis and four straight points from Rudolph knotted the game at 65-65 with 3:35 remaining in the second half. The lead changed hands seven times over the next two minutes, but the Beavers took a 73-72 lead on a jumper by Rudolph with 35 seconds to play.
Rudolph then made 2-of-4 free throw attempts to give the Beavers a 75-72 lead with three seconds to play setting up the game-tying heroics from Krieger.
Rudolph, Ricci Maia, Moore, Davis and Green all played in their final game in a Minot State uniform on Saturday.
