LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Minot State baseball team scored eight unanswered runs in the final two innings to overcome a six-run deficit in the second game of a doubleheader vs. Winona State to win 9-7 at Copeland Park in La Crosse, Wis.
The Beavers also won the first game 11-5 to improve to 4-8 (2-0 NSIC) on the season while the Warriors fall to 1-8 (0-2 NSIC).
Game One
Minot State opened their first NSIC series of the season by hanging a crooked number on the scoreboard in the first inning. The Beavers scored four runs while capitalizing on a Winona State error and notching two hits.
Kyle Williamson led off the game reaching off an infield error, followed by
Wyatt Schlosser and
Michael Borst reaching on walks.
Williamson scored after
Darrel Doll reached on a bases-loaded walk. The Beavers doubled their lead when Schlosser scored on an RBI groundout by
Celestino Rodriguez.
Minot State added two more runs when
Andrew Black ripped a two RBI single up the middle, scoring Borst and Doll.
The Beavers tacked on another run in the second inning when Schlosser scored on an RBI single from Borst after hitting a double to left field.
Winona State scored their first run of the game in fourth inning, trimming Minot State's lead down to 5-1.
Minot State answered in the next half inning, exploding for five runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Schlosser led off the inning with a double to right center before stealing third and scoring on a passed ball.
Borst walked and Doll hit a double to center before Black hit an RBI single to left to score Borst. Doll later scored on a wild pitch and Black scored on an RBI single from
Dustin Wilcox. McDougall scored the final run of the inning after Williamson was hit by a pitch.
Winona State responded with a solo home run to right field by Zac Stange in the fifth inning. The Warriors added another run in the sixth on an RBI single, cutting Minot State's lead to 10-3.
The Beavers added a run in the seventh when Black scored on an RBI groundout from Wilcox while the Warriors added two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Minot State scored 11 runs on eight hits while the Warriors scored their five runs on 10 hits and committed three errors.
Schlosser, Wilcox and Black led the Beavers at the plate with two hits each while Black notched a team-high three RBIs. Doll and Borst registered one hit apiece in the victory.
Justin Demary earned his first victory of the season, improving his record to 1-3. The Lake Charles, La. native tossed six innings while surrendering three runs on eight hits and striking out six batters.
Lane Biggs pitched one inning of relief while giving up two runs on two hits and striking out one batter.
Game Two
Ethan Fleming opened the scoring in the second game of the doubleheader with a solo home run in the third inning to give Minot State a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors took their first lead of the day when Andrew Pliner ripped a two RBI single to right field as the Warriors led 2-1 after five innings.
Winona State added another run in the sixth inning before pouring on four runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead over Minot State going into the final two innings.
Minot State scored two runs in the eighth inning when Williamson came home on an RBI single from Rodriguez and Borst scored on a sac fly from
Zack Kunkel.
Trailing 7-3, Fleming opened the ninth inning with a single and Williamson reached on a single to left field before Schlosser reached on a fielder's choice. Borst followed with a single to score Fleming before Doll launched his team-leading third home run of the season over the right field fence, tying the game at seven.
The momentum continued for Minot State as Rodriguez double to right field before Kunkel smacked the go-ahead two-run home run down the right field line to clinch Minot State's 9-7 victory over the Warriors.
Borst and Rodriguez led Minot State with three hits each while Williamson, Doll and Fleming posted two hits apiece.
Doll and Kunkel recorded a team-high three RBIs while Borst, Rodriguez and Fleming tallied one RBI.
Starter
Reilly O'Rourke lasted 5.1 innings on the mound while striking out four Warriors before
Brock Breshears pitched the next 1.2 innings in a relief appearance.
Jaymon Cervantes notched his first win of the season while tossing two perfect innings and striking out two batters.
The two teams wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
