WATFORD CITY, N.D. -- Junior
Wyatt Schlosser belted four home runs and drove in six runs leading Minot State to a sweep of Minnesota Crookston in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Beavers won the opener 7-6 and completed the sweep with a 9-5 victory in game two.
Schlosser was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs, a double and three RBIs in game one and then was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs and three RBIs in the second game.
Schlosser wasted little time in getting things started in game one as he ripped a double to left centerfield to score
Kyle Williamson in the bottom of the first inning.
Michael Borst followed with a triple to up the lead to 2-0 and
Celestino Rodriguez capped the inning with a single that plated Borst giving the Beavers an early 3-0 lead.
After Minnesota Crookston cut the lead to 3-1, Schlosser unloaded his first homer of the day to right field giving Minot State a 4-1 lead after two innings.
Ethan Mushitz countered with a home run for Minnesota Crookston, but the Beavers extended the lead to 7-2 with a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning.
Dustin Wilcox accounted for the Minot State run in the third inning when he roped a double that scored Rodriguez giving the Beavers a 5-2 lead. Schlosser hit a one-out homer in the fourth inning to up the lead to 6-2 and Rodriguez lofted a sacrifice fly later in the inning that scored Borst to up the margin to 7-2.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth inning, but
Justin Demary worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Jaymon Cervantes earned the win for the Beavers as he worked 5.2 and allowed three earned runs while striking out 11.
Minnesota Crookston, which dropped to 10-13 overall and 0-8 in the NSIC, took an early lead in game two when Anthony Stewart homered and the Golden Eagles tacked on a run on a Minot State error.
The Beavers, who improved to 10-10 overall and 8-2 in the NSIC, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Darrel Doll hit a two-run double that scored Borst and Schlosser to tie the game at 2-2, and
Trevaun Smith put the Beavers in front 3-2 when he doubled in Doll.
Minnesota Crookston regained the lead at 4-3 with two runs in the top of the second inning, but Schlosser blasted his third home run of the day in the bottom of the second inning giving Minot State a 5-4 lead.
Stewart hit his second home run of the game for the Golden Eagles in the top of the sixth inning to knot the game at 5-5, but Smith and
Ethan Fleming countered with long balls for the Beavers in the bottom half of the inning putting Minot State ahead to stay.
Schlosser hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning and
Andrew Black added an RBI groundout to up the Minot State lead to 9-5.
Tannar Galey earned the victory for the Beavers in relief, while
Wyatt Moore pitched out of trouble in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Minot State will return to action on Friday (March 30) when it visits Wayne State to begin a four-game series.
