Beavers Split with Mary in NSIC Opener

MINOT, N.D. -- Haley Hernandez had two hits and drove in a run and Minot State used a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to earn a split with Mary in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both schools on Tuesday in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium. The Beavers won the opener of the doubleheader 6-5 and Mary bounced back to win game two 7-2.

The Beavers entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing the Marauders 5-2 before coming all the way back to win the game.

Camille Greene led off the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to second when Lauren Cowden followed with a single to centerfield. Julia Suchan then singled to left to score pinch-runner Amanda Izzo to cut the Mary lead to 5-3.

Following a pitching change, the Beavers crept to within 5-4 when Cowden scored on a wild pitch by Sarah Thompson. With Suchan on third, Ashley Hill drew a walk and Isis Cabral lifted a sacrifice fly to right that plated Suchan and tied the game at 5-5.

Kyla Larson kept the rally alive with a single down the leftfield line which advanced Hill to second base. Pinch-runner Alaina Marshall then came around to score when Hernandez reached on a Mary error giving the Beavers an improbable 6-5 victory.

Cowden, Tori Zimmermann, Larson and Hernandez each picked up a pair of hits for the Beavers, while Suchan and Skyla Neubauer each notched one hit.

Laura Mendez picked up the win in the circle for the Beavers as she went 7.0 innings and allowed five runs and struck out two in improving to 5-6 on the season.

Mary rode the pitching of Thompson to the victory in game two as she held the Beavers hitless until the sixth inning and permitted one earned run and struck out seven.

Larson hit her fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning to break up the shutout and the Beavers tacked on another run by virtue of a Mary error.

Zimmermann, Larson and Sami Jo Henry had the hits for the Beavers in game two.

Minot State, which is 14-9 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC, will return to action on Friday (March 30) when it hosts Minnesota Duluth for an NSIC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
