Beavers Rally Nets Split with Minnesota Duluth

MINOT, N.D. -- Isis Cabral capped a seven-run rally with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifting Minot State to an 8-7 victory over Minnesota Duluth and a split of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Friday in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium.

Cabral was 2-for-3 in game one and hit a two-out single to right that scored Kyla Larson with what proved to be the winning run in the comeback. Larson began the sixth-inning rally by drawing a two-out walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch before scampering home with the winning run on the Cabral single.

Laura Mendez, who went the distance in the victory, worked around two errors in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the win. After the first two batters reached via Beaver fielding errors, Mendez got two straight pops up before hitting a batter to load the bases. Mendez then struck out the final batter swinging to improve to 6-6 on the season.

Minot State, which is 15-10 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC following the split, trailed 7-1 after four innings in the opener before staging a dramatic comeback.

Minot State pushed across six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game.

Lauren Cowden started the rally with a triple to right centerfield. Julia Suchan walked and both runners scored when Tori Zimmermann laced a double to left centerfield to trim the lead to 7-3.

Larson walked and after a pop up, Haley Hernandez singled to left to load the bases with one out. Camille Greene reached on an infield single that brought home Zimmermann and Skyla Neubauer hit an RBI groundout to bring Larson home and cut the lead to 7-5.

The Beavers tied the game at 7-7 when Dakota DeLong reached on an error, which allowed Hernandez and Greene to both cross the plate.

Zimmermann was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener, while Cowden, Suchan, Hernandez, Greene and Neubauer each had base hits.

Minnesota Duluth, which is 20-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play after the split, bounced back to win the second game 8-2 behind the pitching of Breanna Swint. Swint went the distance and allowed four hits and one earned run, while striking out four to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Zimmermann hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning for the Beavers and Cabral tripled and scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Suchan, Zimmermann, Larson and Cabral had base hits for Minot State in game two.

Minot State returns to action on Saturday (March 31) as it hosts St. Cloud State for a NSIC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium.
