MINOT, N.D. --
Skyla Neubauer had two hits and drove in two runs for Minot State, but 10th-ranked Winona State swept the Beavers in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the South Hill Softball Complex. The Warriors won the opener 11-5 and then capped the day with an 8-0 win in the second game.
Neubauer had a hit and drove in two runs in game one and then had one of the Beavers two hits in the second game.
Isis Cabral recorded three hits on the day and drove in a run, while
Julia Suchan had a hit in each game.
Haley Hernandez drove in a pair of runs in the opener.
Winona State (33-5, 12-2 NSIC) scored three runs in the top of the first inning of game one, but the Beavers would rally to tie the score.
In the Beavers second inning,
Ashley Hill and
Camille Greene each reached on infield singles with one out. After Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice eliminating Hill at third base, Neubauer ripped a triple to right that plated both runners and brought Minot State to within 3-2.
The Beavers would tie the score in the bottom of the third inning when Cabral singled up the middle to bring home Suchan who had singled to lead off the inning.
Winona State regained the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fourth inning and extended the lead to 9-3 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Minot State (21-18, 8-10 NSIC) got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hernandez singled to centerfield scoring pinch-runner
Melissa Estrada and Cabral.
The Warriors added two runs in the top of the seventh inning and retired the Beavers in the bottom half of the inning with no further damage to earn the 11-5 win.
McKenna Larsen went the distance for the Warriors to earn the victory, while
Laura Mendez took the loss for Minot State.
Game two of the doubleheader belonged to Winona State pitcher Jordyn Kleman who allowed just two hits and struck out nine to pick up her 14th win of the season.
Suchan picked up the Beavers first hit of the second game in the fourth inning when she blasted a double to centerfield, but the Beavers were unable to bring her home.
Winona State led by a slim 1-0 margin after four innings, but scored five times in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open.
Minot State will continue NSICÂ play on Sunday (April 22) when it hosts Upper Iowa for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at the South Hill Softball Complex. Sunday will also mark Senior Day for the Beavers as
