MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State baseball team won the first game of a doubleheader vs. Upper Iowa (2-1) on a walk-off double before overcoming a four-run deficit to win the second game (7-4) and clinch the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep at Corbett Field.
The Beavers improve to 25-14 (23-6 NSIC) while the Peacocks fall to 14-19 (12-15 NSIC) on the season.
Game One
Minot State opened the scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
Justin Demary reached on a fielding error before
Dustin Wilcox singled through the right side, scoring Demary and giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Starter
Jaymon Cervantes carried the momentum from his complete-game performance last weekend, as Cervantes held the Peacocks scoreless through the first six innings.
Upper Iowa opened the seventh inning with a solo home run over the fence in right field, tying the game at one.
Cervantes retired the Peacocks without any more damage to take a tied game into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trevaun Smith singled to left field before
Michael Borst ripped an RBI double to left field, scoring Smith and clinching the walk-off 2-1 victory for the Beavers in game one.
Smith, Borst and Wilcox recorded two hits apiece while
Wyatt Schlosser added one hit.
Cervantes improved to 5-0 after giving up the lone run on seven hits and striking out six batters in a complete-game effort.
Game Two
The Peacocks broke the scoreless tie in the second inning with four runs on four hits to plate an early 4-0 lead over Minot State.
Borst and Schlosser led off the fourth inning with consecutive singles before Demary's RBI single allowed Borst to score and trimmed the Peacock lead down to three, 4-1.
Minot State took control of the game in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 5-4 advantage over the Peacocks.
Ethan Fleming led off the inning and Smith followed with a double to put a pair of Beavers on.
Celestino Rodriguez followed with a three-run home run over the fence in right center to give Minot State a 5-4 lead.
The Beavers added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from
Kyle Williamson and an RBI single by Wilcox.
Minot State held off a late comeback attempt from the Peacocks to hold on for the 7-4 victory and clinch the doubleheader sweep over Upper Iowa.
Starter
Aaron Bernal lasted six innings on the mound, striking out three Peacocks and allowing four runs on seven hits to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Tannar Galey pitched two innings of hitless relief before
Jack Gamba recorded the final three outs to post his third save of the season.
Demary led the Beavers with three hits while Fleming, Smith and Borst notched two hits each. Rodriguez recorded a team-high three RBIs on a three-run home run.
