SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Junior
Isis Cabral had two hits and drove in two runs, but Minot State could not withstand an early offensive outburst from Concordia-St. Paul as the Beavers fell to the Golden Bears 14-6 in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday at Bowden Field.
Minot State, which dropped to 25-23 on the season, will face either Minnesota Duluth or Sioux Falls in a loser-out game at 4 p.m. later today.
Cabral finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Beaver offense.
Julia Suchan and
Tori Zimmermann also had a pair of hits for Minot State, while
Ashley Hill hit a solo home run.
Concordia-St. Paul, which advances to meet second-seed Augustana in the second round, scored four runs in each of the first three innings. Aryka Knoche was 3-for-3 with five RBIs to pace the Golden Bears 16-hit attack.
Concordia-St. Paul, which improved to 29-22 on the year, scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead it would not surrender.
Minot State got a run back in the top of the second inning when Hill hit her fourth home run of the season to leftfield cutting the lead to 4-1.
The Golden Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, but the Beavers answered with three runs in the top of the third inning.
Lauren Cowden led off with a single and advanced to third when Zimmermann singled two batters later.
Kyla Larson scored one run when she reached on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 8-2 and Cabral followed with a double to center that brought home Larson bringing Minot State to within 8-3.
Aubry Johnson ripped a double to centerfield, which scored Cabral to cap the inning and cut the lead to 8-4.
Concordia-St. Paul responded with four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to expand the lead to 12-4.
Minot State added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Suchan singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Zimmermann doubled to rightfield. Cabral hit an RBI single to left allowing Suchan to score and Zimmermann scored on a double steal attempt to bring the Beavers to within 12-6.
Concordia-St. Paul would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via the run rule.
