Minot State Travels to Sioux Falls for NSIC Road Tilt

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State football team resumes action on Saturday (Sept. 29) when it travels to Sioux Falls to face the Cougars in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game at Bob Young Field at 1 p.m.

THIS WEEK: Minot State hits the road after playing back-to-back home games as it visits Sioux Falls for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate contest. This marks the Beavers second road game of the season after playing at Northern State on Sept. 6.

LAST TIME THEY MET: No. 15 Sioux Falls scored 34 straight points to pull away from Minot State on its way to a 41-14 victory over the Beavers in Herb Parker Stadium. Luke Papillion, who scored two touchdowns on the day, raced 72 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game. Minot State answered with a touchdown of its own to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the second quarter. The Cougars then got two TD runs from Max Mickey to take a20-7 lead into halftime and then tacked on three more TD's in the second half to bust the game open.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEAVERS: Ben Bolinske threw three touchdown passes, but a late Minot State rally fell short as the Beavers lost to Minnesota Crookston 29-21 at Herb Parker Stadium. Lavante Bushnell caught two of the TD passes from Bolinske and senior Kywan Owens had a career-high 14 tackles to lead the Beaver defense. Chris Rivers intercepted a pass for the second straight game for Minot State.

GOOD TURNOVERS: The Minot State defense has been opportunistic through the first four games of the season with 13 turnovers. The Beavers currently rank third in NCAA Division II in turnover margin and turnovers gained. Senior Kiante Goudeau leads the way for the Beavers as he has three interceptions and he also has recovered two fumbles. Chris Rivers, who leads the team with 29 tackles, has two interceptions, while Ryan DeMarois, Mikael Bradford and Jemal Williams each have one interception. Kywan Owens, Jordan Will and Justin Coleman also have fumble recoveries for Minot State.

KICKING UP A STORM: Junior kicker/punter JoseLuis Moreno has been outstanding for the Beavers through the first four games. Moreno, who was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in the win over Mary, is averaging 41.8 yards per punt and has eight punts over 50 yards on the season. He is 4-of-4 on field goal attempts, which includes making a school-record 58-yard field goal versus Mary. Additionally, Moreno is averaging 60.1 yards on his kickoff attempts and has 11 touchbacks on 17 kickoffs.

NATIONAL HONORS FOR MORENO: Junior kicker/punter JoseLuis Moreno was selected as the D2football.com Special Teams Player of the Week after his brilliant performance against Mary. Moreno was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts and nailed a school-record 58 yarder. He also averaged 42.6 yards per punt and tied the school record with an 88-yard punt.

PICK SIX: Freshman linebacker Ryan DeMarois made his first career interception even more memorable as he returned the pick 27 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter against Mary.

ABOUT SIOUX FALLS: Sioux Falls enters the game with a 3-1 overall record and is ranked 23rd in the nation in the D2football.com Top 25 Poll. The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll, has won two straight games and piled up 1,076 yards of total offense in the two wins. Sioux Falls defeated Augustana 51-13 last week and had 576 yards of total offense.
