(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State soccer team celebrated their Breast Cancer Awareness Game with their second victory of the season. The Beavers enjoyed a final 3-1 margin over the visiting Sioux Falls Cougars.
The Beavers and Cougars played to a draw at the half before the action picked up in pace.
USF started the scoring in the 52
nd-minute when Olivia Valdez scored her first goal of the season after an assist from Aundria Vargas.
The Beavers answered abruptly with a scoring strike from
Melanie van Walstijn (55'). Junior
Sofia Lewis then scored her second and third goals of the year in the 67
th- and 75
th-minute, respectively. All three of the Beavers' goals were unassisted.
Lewis led the aggressive Minot State offense with seven total shots and three on goal that resulted in her two scores. Van Walsitjn and Pena three and two shots, respectively.
The Sioux Falls offense was paced by reserve Olivia Valdez with one goal on three shots. McKayla Philippi, Alexis Naujokaitis, and Aundria Vargas all took two shots each. Vargas recorded one assist on Sioux Falls' lone goal.
In goal, Beaver senior
Erin Rafferty had a solid game with only one goal allowed and a total of five saves.
For the Cougars, GK Alexis Wemhoff allowed the three MSU scores and only recorded one save.
