(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State soccer team was beaten in the weekend finale by Minnesota State. The Beavers and Mavericks played a high-scoring contest and the visitors came out on top 5-2.
The 4
th-ranked Mavericks proved their national standing in the first half with four goals scored by four different players. Brynn Desens got on the board early with a goal on a penalty kick in the 4
th-minute. Bri Ciaccio (13'), Nadia Lowery (19'), and Jenny Vetter (26') all contributed to the Mavericks' offensive show. Molly Riley got in on the action later with a goal in the 76
th-miniute. Vetter and Desens each also recorded an assist.
The Beaver offense played well as Minot State matched the Mavs' aggression with a 16
th-minute goal by
Daniela Fonseca and a 60
th-minute score by
Kelsey Pena. Fonseca's score was her second of the season.
Melanie van Walstijn and Pena also assisted on the Beavers' two goals.
In goal, Minnesota State's Mackenzie Rath allowed two goals but also saved six shots.
On the other end of the field, Minot's keeper
Mackenzie Long, made eight stops to go along with five goals allowed in her first start of the season.
Following the loss, the Beavers' record now sits at 1-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in NSIC play. Minnesota State improved their record to 6-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league action.
The Minot State soccer team will be on the road for their next two competitions. The Beavers will visit Bemidji State University on Friday, Oct. 11 and Minnesota-Crookston on Sunday, Oct. 13.
