Softball Sweeps With Walk-Off Victories

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State softball team recorded a 6-5 win in 12 innings before overcoming a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second to win 11-10 and clinch the doubleheader sweep with a pair of walk-off victories over Bemidji State in the Air-Supported Dome.
 
The victories push Minot State to 19-12 overall and 8-6 in NSIC play.

How It Happened
  • Minot State took at 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Lauren Cowden doubled home Maggie Mercer.
  • The Beavers doubled their lead in the next inning when Mercer reached on a BSU error, allowing Rianna Aasen to score.
  • Bemidji State scored a run in the fourth inning and tacked on four more in the fifth on five hits and two Minot State errors to grab a 5-2 lead.
  • Cowden led off the bottom of the fifth inning with an inside-the-park home run.
  • Minot State tied the game in the fifth off RBI singles from Randi Wright and Kiera Shwaluk.
  • After six scoreless innings between the two teams, Minot State walked off in the 12th inning on Cowden's RBI single to left field, scoring Mercer.

  • Wright, Cowden, Mercer, Shwaluk and Jamie Odlum recorded three hits apiece.
  • Cowden led the Beavers with three RBI while Mercer touched home a team-high two times.
  • Kylie Patrick improved to 1-0 on the season after throwing 7.2 shutout innings in relief while striking out eight batters.

How It Happened
  • Bemidji State opened the game with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.
  • Odlum notched an RBI groundout and Karlee Coughlin hit an RBI single to score Mercer and tie the game at two.
  • BSU added a pair of runs in the second inning to take another two-run lead.
  • Wright began the bottom of the second with an inside-the-park home run.
  • Minot State scored on back-to-back bases loaded walks before Coughlin ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to give Minot State a 7-4 lead.
  • Bemidji State scored a run in the fourth and tacked on five in the fifth to gain a 10-7 advantage.
  • Minot State cut into the deficit when Wright reached on a throwing error and circled the bases to cut the deficit to two runs.
  • Julia Suchan drilled a two-RBI single through the left side, scoring Melissa Estrada and Wright to tie the game at 10.
  • Mercer lifted a fly ball deep to center, allowing Suchan to score the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

  • Coughlin led Minot State at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and three RBI.
