Wild Ninth Inning Rally Sinks Marauders in Sweep

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Minot State baseball team scored six runs on one hit to rally and overcome a three-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning and clinch a doubleheader sweep at UMary on Tuesday afternoon in Bismarck, N.D.
 
The Beavers took the first game 7-0 before escaping with a 10-8 win in game two.
 
Game One: Minot State 7, UMary 0
 
How It Happened
  • The Beavers got on the board in the third inning when Darrel Doll reached on an error with the bases loaded to score Trevaun Smith.
  • Celestino Rodriguez followed with a two-RBI single down the right field line to extend the lead to 3-0 after three innings.
  • Jake Collins opened the fourth inning with a triple before scoring on a RBI single by Andrew Black.
  • Collins scored in the sixth inning when Smith drew a walk with the bases loaded.
  • Minot State tacked on two more runs in the inning when Black scored on a passed ball and Doll lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ryley Humrighouse.

  • Celestino Rodriguez led the Beavers with two hits.
  • Doll and Rodriguez knocked in a team-high two RBI apiece while Collins touched home twice for Minot State.
  • Jaymon Cervantes earned the win with his complete-game shutout performance.
  • Cervantes tied the DII career school record in wins, improving to 11-0 as a Beaver with eight strikeouts in the win.

How It Happened
  • A solo home run gave the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Minot State tied the game when Jackson Pokorney opened the third frame with his first collegiate home run.
  • The Marauders scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Doll slammed a solo home run in the sixth inning, his third home run in as many days to the cut the UMary lead to 5-2.
  • The Marauders got the run back in the bottom half of the inning.
  • An RBI groundout by Pokorney in the seventh and Borst in the eighth trimmed the deficit to 6-4 before the Marauders added a run in the eighth.
  • Minot State opened the ninth with the first three batters reaching base before Mason Gifford clubbed a pinch hit three-RBI double down the right field line to clear the bases and tie the game at seven.
  • Borst's sacrifice fly brought home the go-ahead run before the Beavers added two more on Marauder throwing errors to take a 10-7 lead.
  • UMary scored a run in the ninth, but that wasn't enough as Minot State held on for a 10-8 victory.
