Beaver Football Wins Second Straight

(MINOT, N.D.) -- The Minot State University Football team was in Crookston, Minn. on Saturday. They left Crookston with a 24-16 victory over the Golden Eagles, moving to 2-2 on the season. It is the first time since 2012 that Minot State has won back to back games.

Early in the first quarter, the Beavers were able to strike early. After a 31-yard connection from Ben Bolinske to Lavante Bushnell, the Beavers took an early lead on Devon Owens second receiving touchdown of the season. Minnesota Crookston answered quickly, however on a 46-yard touchdown. With 9:45 to go in the first quarter, it was tied at 7-7. After a quick start, both offensives would slow for the remainder of the first quarter as the quarter would end in the same score.

The second quarter would see more of the same with the defenses staying strong until a Minnesota Crookston FG attempt with under 10 minutes to go in the second quarter. They would come on for the try, but a poor snap led to them not getting the opportunity. The Beavers would take over on offense with the score still tied at seven. Ali Mohamed would take over the ensuing drive, ripping off runs of 17, 26, and 11 yards to set up JoseLuis Moreno for the FG attempt. As usual, he was pure from 42-yards giving the Beavers a 10-7 lead. A big play would follow on the Golden Eagles ensuing drive as Tristan Robbins would carry it for 37-yards. The Beavers defense playing well, would once again tighten up getting a huge sack on 3rd down to force a punt. The Beavers would take over offensively and would drive right down the field. On 2nd & goal from the 1, Isaiah Hall would punch it in, expanding their lead to 17-7 to go into the locker room.

The Minot State defense continued its play, forcing a three and out on the opening drive of the 2nd half. On the Beavers first offensive drive of the half, they continued to lean on the run game, rushing it on all seven plays. Bolinske, Mohamed, and Hall all contributed, with Mohamed getting the 10-yard score for his second touchdown of the game, expanding the lead to 24-7. On the next drive, the Golden Eagle offense got some momentum going picking up two first downs before the Beaver defense stepped up and stopped them once again, this time on 4th down. Neither team would score during the remainder of the 3rd quarter, going into the fourth with the Beavers leading 24-7 and driving to the end the third quarter.

The Beavers would pick up where they left to end the quarter, starting with the ball at the Minnesota Crookston 22-yard line and would be stopped on a fourth-and-one play giving the ball back to the Golden Eagle offense. Minnesota Crookston would attempt a deep ball, it would be intercepted by Jonathan Coleman but would be for naught as the Beavers were flagged for a roughing the passer penalty. With new life on the drive, they would attempt another big play. This time, they would convert on a 43-yard pass to get into the red zone. The Beavers defense would tighten up once again, not allowing seven and instead, Minnesota Crookston would be forced to settle for a field goal to trim the Beaver lead to 24-10. With 7:13 to go, the Golden Eagles would drive down the field. On a pass to the endzone, the Beaver defense would make a play. Knylen Miller would reach up and make a one-handed interception to just about seal the game with the Beavers leading 24-10 with just over five minutes to play. The Beavers would not go conservative as Bolinske found Lavante Bushnell for a 31-yard reception on third down. However, with 3:02 to play Hall would fumble to give the ball back to Minnesota Crookston. The Golden Eagles would drive the ball 91 yards on nine plays to cut the Beaver lead to 24-16 with a missed pat. The Beavers would recover the ensuing onside kick, and they would proceed to kneel the ball a couple of times to seal up the win and move to 2-2.
