(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State women's basketball team lost their 11
th-consecutive game tonight at the hands of the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. SMSU's explosive offense led the way to their 85-61 victory.
The game started and ended in complete control of the contest at the Mustangs jumped out to a 26-10 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs used an incredible display of three-point shooting to their benefit as the Beavers simply could not keep up with the pace. The second quarter showed an even score of 26 points for either side. After the halftime break, however, the offensive woes returned as MSU score only eight points compared to Southwest Minnesota State's 18. The fourth quarter belonged to the Beavers as both benches were emptied relatively early and Minot State outscored the opposition 17-15.
The Mustangs shot the ball spectacularly from the perimeter going 15-31 for a 48.4% shooting rate. Three SMSU players ended the game with double-digit scoring nights including Sadie Stelter with 16, Meleah Reinhart with 15, and Jenna Borchers with 14. The Mustangs also outrebounded Minot State by one, 29-28, with Sara Teske leading that category with seven.
The Beavers struggled to find any consistency but leaned on their leading scorer
Mariah Payne who added 15 points. Forward
Haley Hildenbrand was the only other double-figure scorer with 13. The Beavers' leading rebounder
Calli Delsman, as well as reserve post
Anna Counts, each had a team-high six boards. Payne also added five assists while
Bethany Theodore provided four.
The loss for Minot State was their 11
th consecutive defeat as the Beavers are now 0-11 in NSIC play and 3-12 overall. Southwest Minnesota State improved to the .500 mark and are now 8-8 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
The Beavers will finish their four-game home-stretch tomorrow afternoon when the 14
th-ranked Sioux Falls Cougars will visit the MSU Dome at 3:30 p.m.
